When I taught accounting at University of Michigan, I asked everybody the first day the following question:

Which student taking identical classes would you hire for your company.

Student A
Frosh yr-- all As
Soph yr -- all As
Junior yr -- all As
Senior yr -- all As

Student B
Frosh yr-- all Ds
Soph yr -- all Cs
Junior yr -- all Bs
Senior yr -- all As

Almost everyone said of course student A

But I said, stop and think about that because I know what Student B will do when he encounters a problem, he's going to keep at it with a great work ethic and a will to learn.

Sure Student A may be smarter and he also many times may have a great work ethic.

But some of you may not be Student A, but you all can be Student B.

Remember that and dont underestimate people because you think you're smarter than them.

The next time I read a young person complaining about how their parents had it so much easier than them. I will remind them of things their parents did that they never even thought of doing.

At 12 years old and older many of their parents.

1. Cleaned their own rooms
2. Cleaned all the bathrooms in their house
3. Vacuumed and dusted their room and the house
4. Did their own laundry
5. Made their own lunch and sometimes dinner
6. When they wanted something they had to pay for it themselves by caddying, collecting bottles for refunds, raking people's yards, mowing neighbors grass, babysitting, washing and waxing people's cars, selling seeds, sewing repairs, etc
6. Everything in number 5, you did at your own house for free.
6. Had at least one job in high school and maybe 2 jobs in college.
7. No such thing as a parent loan for college
8. Only rich kids got allowances.
9. If you wanted to make friends, you went outside and found them yourself.
10. If you wanted to go somewhere, you walked or rode your bike.
11. If you wanted a car, you saved up for it and bought an old car and fixed it up. Nobody got a free car at 16 or 18 from their parents. You changed your own oil and bought your own gas.
12. If you wanted clothes you waited until Christmas or earned money to buy your own
13. You did all your own homework without help.
14. When your parents needed help around the house on projects like painting or landscaping, you and your friends would volunteer to help them.
15. If you were so lucky to have a pool, you cleaned it
16. You had one phone inside that you had to share with everyone
17. If you wanted to practice sports, you went to the school and threw a ball against the brick wall or hit tennis balls against it, or played basketball or football on the playground... there were no private sports trainers
18. There were no play dates or weekly get together parties.
19. You paid for your own prom clothes, tickets and dinner. There were no parent provided parties.
20. And more importantly, THERE WAS NO WHINING OR COMPLAINING IT'S NOT FAIR
