Professor Jung: One is naturally scared stiff by the possibility that the #unconscious could do something on its own.

I remember a colleague, a psychotherapist, who likewise couldn’t believe that the unconscious is not a manure pile. Well, I told him, “It moves. It is alive!” He couldn’t grasp this. I told him to try and have a look at his fantasy images. He didn’t know what that meant. I said to him, “Take a look at such an image before falling asleep. Concentrate on it.” This he did, and an image appeared to him, a rock face and an ibex, which stood there completely stock-still. He concentrated on this image. At first nothing happened, and he thought that that was it. He wanted to avert his head. At that moment the ibex turned its head. He was so terribly frightened that he was more perplexed than ever. Then he said, “I don’t know how it happened, but it did move!”

I once treated an artist, a very amusing personality, a stage director, but not from here. He lived in the same boardinghouse as some of the patients. He soon found out that people are frightened when something they hadn’t expected happens. So then he would always ask, “Was it black? Did it move?”⁸⁷ Here again you find that terrible fear of the autonomous unconscious. Hence we don’t want it to be alive. Such persons get into an anxiety state with a pulse rate of 120, or they stage hysterical vomiting.

Then they say that it came out of the unconscious, but the unconscious is not allowed to do anything, one has to think there’s nothing to it. After all, one has already done away with the spook, hasn’t one? It’s not spooky any longer. Haven’t we cleared up the matter? And still Tegel is haunted!⁸⁸

Let us get back to Cardanus: it doesn’t occur to him that the unconscious could be something on its own. He nevertheless assumes that it’s able to make prophecies, and he addresses the spirits. In reality, however, he simply treats it as if it were material for his thoughts. The unconscious tells him that there is a very beautiful order in the unconscious; in addition, this order forms the meaningful symbol of the rose, which actually he completely overlooks. His interpretation is totally inadequate. He also identifies quite directly with #Mercury on the right side. This gives us an insight into this man’s state of #consciousness. It was the time, the beginning, of the great hubris of consciousness, in which even the Christian gods were doomed; it was the age of the Reformation, of the great voyages of discovery, of the revival of antiquity, etc. I once quoted to you from the confession of Agrippa von Nettesheim, who calls himself “daemon et deus et omnia.”⁸⁹

Well, what appears here in the #mandala, in the symbol of the rose, is a very significant symbol; however, it is also said in a very abstract manner that it is a totality, a circle. In #alchemy it is simply called rotundum,⁹⁰ the round element, and this is the epitome of the microcosm, the roundness of the deity. In Empedocles, too, sphairos, the globe, is the highest god. The globe is a perfect shape.⁹¹ And so is the star that had fallen into Cardanus’s yard, and which is found here in the unconscious, indeed where the fifteen stars and the moon are.

Now at the end of the #dream there comes the hint that he’d have to wait until Mercury had a congressus⁹² with the #moon. The moon always means the female, the #shadow side, the dark side or the night side. In a man it is a symbol of the unconscious, the #anima, whereas the sun represents male consciousness. And the goal of the development in the dream, the goal of the #individuation process, is that “coniunctio solis et lunae,”⁹³ to bring consciousness into connection with the unconscious. Why is he supposed to get in connection with the unconscious? What might be the reason? And what happens afterward?

Participant: Then order will be established in the totality.

Professor Jung: Male, mercurial consciousness will unite with the lunar unconscious, and Mercury will thus enter into that symbol of the rose, into the cosmic order of the unconscious. What will develop in the lunar world if Mercury enters into it?

Participant: There will be consciousness.

Professor Jung: Yes, at first there is no consciousness, but when Mercury enters into it, consciousness will develop. After all, that’s the purpose of the coniunctio, that the unconscious be filled by consciousness. And what should fill consciousness from the unconscious? What does the unconscious bring into consciousness?

Participant: Life.

Professor Jung: Yes, the unconscious, the dark, simply lives and simply goes on functioning. It is. But nobody knows it. Nobody is present; nobody takes part in this. We only fear it, keep it at a distance, so that we make certain that we are not going to be lived, so that we can go on cherishing illusions. Man, however, is both someone who thinks and is thought.

Participant: The dark is chaotic.

Professor Jung: That’s what we think. One would think that the cosmos is what is conscious, but this is not so at all. Sometimes it is ordered, sometimes not. Sometimes there is simply disorder, disorientation, in the unconscious. We have no order in consciousness. Therefore we find order in the unconscious, not in consciousness. That’s the remarkable discovery: there is order in the unconscious, not in consciousness. At what time was there order in consciousness?
