This is sadly, what we have become... no longer human enough to stand up for the most vulnerable among us! Not even the institutions set up as guard rails are doing their job. Something must change and change soon!
A high school student. Thrown from Nicco Sacco matatu KDV 713J while 33 passengers watched silently. Nobody helped. Nobody spoke. He had exams to sit and a future to live. Now he is gone.

School Unrest: Is it discipline, mental health, leadership gaps, pressure on learners or something deeper? Tune in as Dr @ManyasaChebi - ED @usawaagenda joins @ntvkenya@NationFmKE#FixingtheNation to interrogate causes of school unrest & how to create safe learning environment.
I would have bought your argument 100x over if there was no life lost and no life changing injuries caused to innocent children. Once a life is lost through deliberate action, a red line is crossed. It doesn't matter what one is struggling with. Accountability is my demand!
Blaming kids for burning down a school reminds me of my own childhood. Many times I would deliberately get into trouble, not because I was “bad,” but because it was the only language I had for pain I didn’t understand. It was a cry for help that nobody around me could read. Only much later, after speaking to a therapist, did I realise I had been struggling with mental health issues.
So before we rush to label children as evil or irredeemable, we should ask deeper questions. What pain are they carrying? What pressures are they living under? Too many young people today are battling depression, trauma, anxiety, neglect, and emotional isolation in silence. Sometimes destructive behaviour is less about criminal intent and more like a flare shot into the night sky by a child who feels unseen.
@SankaraDispatch A suspected murderer deserves to be held in a police cell! In fact for suspected murderers, police cell is the safest place for them. Do you have an idea of the pain parents of victims are going through? Do you know if none of them would want to harm the suspects?
Parents of the students accused of killing others at Utumishi Girls. The actions of some parents in causing drama at the police station appear insensitive to the pain being experienced by the affected families. Instead, they should give the police enough time to conduct investigations into the Utumishi Girls incident.
Their children are safe in police custody, while other parents are mourning children who are in the mortuary awaiting identification. The best thing they can do now is hire lawyers to ensure their children are treated fairly, allow the investigation to take its course, and show sympathy to the affected families.
To ascertain the culpability (theoretically) of students and the bad influence from home, it may be insightful to observe the behavior and demeanor of the parents as depicted in this video. It is very clear the daughter of this man is among the top planners of arson. So sad. Let him look for a lawyer before Tuesday when the suspects will be arraigned in court.
When someone asks why there was a CCTV camera inside a girls’ dormitory and you respond with “children died and you’re worried about cameras?”, you’re not making an argument.
You’re using a straw man fallacy by pretending they care more about cameras than the children.
You’re creating a false dichotomy by acting as if people must choose between caring about the victims or asking questions about privacy and child protection.
You’re engaging in relative privation by suggesting that because a bigger tragedy occurred, other legitimate concerns should be ignored.
People are capable of holding multiple thoughts at once. Demanding accountability for a fire and questioning surveillance of minors are not mutually exclusive.
Thank you @Donsarigo for sharing this story. What you describe here is the main course of fateful fires in our schools -the fact that culprits can buy their freedom from responsibility. If people answered for their crimes, we would minimise these cases. Eyes on Utumishi case!
Students must understand that there are consequences when they set other human beings on fire.
When I visited Naivasha maximum prison I met the only suspect sentenced to death for the May 24, 1999 arson attack in Nyeri High School that claimed the lives of four prefects.
The student was 33 years old or thereabout when I met him. He was convicted by a juvenile court and later committed to life imprisonment after he turned 18.
The 2001 Kyanguli fire tragedy claimed the lives of 67 students. Two 16-year-olds were arrested and charged with murder. The judge handling the matter resigned in 2006 amid corruption-related allegations. A new judge declared the court matter a mistrial.
I took my time with the file, and it was clear that someone had done everything to make sure the two boys escaped justice. I tracked one down to an office in the CBD. He is somewhere out here.
The July 13, 1991, St Kizito High School massacre remains the most disturbing and heart-wrenching story I have covered.
The boys stormed the girls' dormitory. Reason? They had refused to join them in a strike.
In the ensuing violence, 71 school girls were raped and 19 of them lost their lives, mostly due to suffocation after being tightly packed into a corner during the attack.
Some were arrested and as usual, parents worked the justice system and many escaped the hangman’s noose.
But in a dark twist of events, most of the accused “turned mad”, and others ended up as drunks.
I remember visiting a lady now in her fifties who was still overwhelmed by the events of that night- oh she cried.
I met most of the boys then now men. Drunkards. Wasted.
Let’s see how the tragic Utumishi Fire tragedy plays out but if the prosecution proves those arrested are involved, it will be the end of school and freedom.
I have been to Nyeri, St Kizito, Kyanguli, Endarasha, and Bombolulu Girls' High School.
It's a life-changing experience!
No amount of justice or compensation can bring back the lives lost.
🕊️ Cecilia Wanjiku, a Form Four student at Utumishi Girls, is being remembered for extraordinary courage during the dormitory fire.
Reports say she repeatedly helped classmates escape, waking sleeping students, guiding others through smoke and shouting instructions as panic spread.
After helping save others, Cecilia later succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire. Kenya mourns a young life remembered for bravery, compassion and selflessness. 💔
Our Executive Director, Dr. @ManyasaChebi, was at @bbcswahili last night discussing issues of school safety in relation to the unfortunate school fire at Utumishi Girls' Academy.
Kenya cannot normalise recurring school fire tragedies that have been occurring year after year.
During the Moi Girls fire I was shocked that parents were seeing the dorms for the first time. This fake ass policy no parents going to dorms needs to be fought by all PTAs and parents.
