A Marine Veteran with brutal service-connected injuries just reached out to me — he was denied palliative care and effective pain management at Phoenix VA.

This isn’t rare. Thousands of combat veterans battle severe chronic pain from injuries sustained in service, only to face strict opioid restrictions, long waits, access barriers, and treatment plans that don’t fully relieve their suffering.

The VA has shifted heavily to non-opioid approaches, but for many with extreme combat injuries, it’s not enough. Phoenix VA has a documented history of access problems, and far too many veterans feel the system has slammed the door after they gave everything.

We served. We earned real relief — not endless red tape and dismissal.Phoenix VA and VA nationwide: Do better for our combat wounded. Improve access to effective chronic pain and palliative care now.

Veterans shouldn’t have to fight this hard for the care they earned.

Subject: Marine Combat Vet Denied Palliative Care at Phoenix VA – Veterans Turning to Alcohol & Street Drugs for Pain

Dear President Trump,

I am The Veterans Conductress (@UnsinkableDolly) and Veterans Advocate, fighting for our nation’s heroes. You appointed Secretary Doug Collins to lead the VA and put “Veterans First.”

A Marine combat Veteran was recently denied palliative care at the Phoenix VA Health Care System. This is not an isolated incident — Veterans are reporting a growing pattern of cases involving denial of adequate chronic pain management, hospice, and palliative care for combat-injured and terminally ill veterans.

One Veteran described the reality on the ground:
“He’s so afraid of being labeled with opioid addiction that he drinks heavily and buys street drugs just to make it through the day with the pain.”

This is what happens when VA pain management fails — Veterans are left choosing between unbearable suffering and dangerous self-medication. These are the same men and women who answered the call to serve. They deserve real relief and dignity, not to be pushed into alcohol and street drugs.

I respectfully request that you direct Secretary Collins to:

Immediately review this specific Marine’s case and the broader Phoenix VA pattern.

Launch a full investigation into palliative care and chronic pain management failures.

Expand effective, individualized pain relief options (including safe opioid use when medically necessary) alongside better non-opioid therapies.

Hold accountable those responsible so no Veteran is forced into this deadly cycle.
