not normally a cetacean person, but saw my first humpback on scuba yesterday in Zavora with @NatureNak and @MarExpeditions and it was breathtaking ๐
Happy #internationalwomensday to all the amazing women that have joined us as at MAR ๐
Year after year we continue to be a female dominated team and we couldnโt be more proud of the strength and perseverance that these women have shown in the field.
Did you catch Ep 32 - Becoming a Manta Ray Scientist with @NatureNak ? We chatted about the non-linear path to becoming a marine scientist, barriers + accepting imposter syndrome. Plus, we dive into Nakia's foundation @MarExpeditions

Sometimes you just have those โpinch meโ kinda days when you realise where youโre at in life. Forever grateful for my life here ๐
An average day in Zavora: manta research with a side humpback whales ๐๐
Bad weather has meant no diving for the last few days so instead we have been catching up on data entry & learning how to identify nudis for our ongoing #nudibranch project!
Tomorrow our survey will also be a competition to see who can find the rarest species. Stay tuned ๐
Do stingrays produce sound in the wild? Interesting first observations from @fiskeforbrains et al that suggest the answer is YES! And in some of the species we have worked with at @JCUOIRS, including this cowtail - @martins_apb@ShioriSharky#sharkscience

Austral winter is the best time to see #megafauna in Mozambique. This week we had #mantarays, #smalleyestingrays, #bullsharks, and #humpbackwhales ON SCUBA. Two manta rays were tagged and our hydrophone was retrieved and re-deployed. A very successful week in Zavora!
๐ข ๐ A new paper is out now on the global collision-risk hotspots of marine traffic and #whalesharks. Co-authored by MMF's @CARohner, this #newresearch illuminates vital data regarding global sea trade and #marinemegafauna injuries.

Patrick the potato bass has been on every dive at this site for the last 6 years. Patrick is a prime example of a resident potato bass that loves humans. With the biggest personality and the sweetest fishy eyes, itโs hard not to love this hilariously awesome fish ๐๐
Happy #EarthDay from our beautiful Zavora!
Thank you to everyone that has supported us and continues to support us, and to everyone fighting hard to conserve our beautiful planet ๐๐๐

We see four different species of turtle in Zavora. Interns are required to identify and photograph them for our turtle ID project. Can you guess which species this is? ๐๐ข

We have some really exciting things planned this year and we canโt wait to share them with you! What interns can expect to see during their time with us: manta rays, whale sharks, humpback whales, bull sharks, turtles, and so much more ๐คฉ. Whoโs joining?! ๐๐ฆ
Itโs #flatsharkfriday! Anyone else love batoids as much as we do? ๐คฉ
Did you know thereโs >600 ray species? And that ~1/3 of them are threatened with extinction? We are supporting batoid research in Mozambique by collecting data on all the rays in Zavora (which is quite a few)!
Mozambique has some of the most diverse subtropical reefs in the world and is home to some of the most threatened species in our oceans. All of our work supports research being done by @marinemegafauna in the Inhambane Province, officially the newest @MissionBlue Hope Spot! ๐
We are beyond excited to announce that the entire Inhambane Seascape, including Zavora, is now a Hope Spot! Thank you @MissionBlue and @MarineMegafauna !!! ๐๐ฆ
New year, new Hope Spot! We are excited to announce our first Hope Spot of 2022: the Inhambane Seascape Hope Spot! ๐๐๐ #HopeSpots

Tibiriรงรก et al. 2020: The description of 2 new Chromodoris species from East Africa. This work was completed by our nudi expert who pioneered nudi research in Zavora and in Mozambique!
Fun fact: One of the species was named after her mother, Celina (Chromodoris celinae) ๐
Our paper on the at-risk and Data Deficient elasmobranchs of Zavora has officially been published!! It provides important baseline information on the #sharks and #rays of Zavora Bay ๐
Congrats to @b_r_i_fada_d on her first first-author publication ๐ฅณ.
