Denmark plans to strengthen copyright law against AI deepfakes, giving people more control over unauthorized copies of their face, voice, and appearance. The proposal isn’t law yet. Should your digital identity be legally protected?

In June 2025, Denmark announced plans to strengthen its copyright law so that people would have stronger legal control over unauthorized digital copies of their face, voice, appearance, and movements, and so that realistic AI-generated deepfakes would be harder to use as a way of taking someone’s identity.

Under the proposal, a person whose realistic AI version was created and publicly shared without consent could demand that it be removed and could potentially seek compensation, and the plan has broad political support in Denmark as a response to identity misuse while generative AI becomes more capable.

The proposal has not yet become law, but if it is approved Denmark could introduce one of Europe’s strongest legal protections against deepfakes, on the question of whether a person’s digital identity should still belong to that person.
