An Argentine mother was filmed encouraging her son to call Mbappé and Vinícius Jr “chimpanzees” while making monkey chants.

This is not just one viral clip. It is part of a deeper football culture that keeps exposing Argentina’s unresolved racism. In 2022, before and after the World Cup final, Argentina fans and even players were filmed singing racist songs about France’s Black players. In 2024, Argentina players were again filmed singing a racist chant about French players of African heritage, leading the French Football Federation to file a complaint with FIFA. Chelsea also opened disciplinary action against Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández.

Now, at this World Cup, Argentine fans were seen abusing IShowSpeed while he supported Cape Verde, calling him “negro” as if Blackness itself was an insult. But this goes far beyond football.

Argentina has long sold itself as the “white European” nation of Latin America. That image was built through European mass migration, state-backed whitening, and the erasure of Afro-Argentine history. Black Argentines helped build the country, shaped its culture, fought in its wars, and influenced everything from tango to language, yet generations were taught to believe they had simply disappeared.

Historians say Argentina’s national identity was built around denying African and Indigenous roots. In 2026, the same debate resurfaced after racist incidents involving Argentine tourists in Brazil.

So when Argentine fans make monkey chants at Mbappé, Vinícius, IShowSpeed or Cape Verde supporters, this is not just “banter”. It is the sound of a country still refusing to confront the Black history it tried to erase.

And the irony here is glaring. Even Argentina’s greatest icon, Diego Maradona, was, according to genetic testing, of Afro-descendant heritage. Yet Argentina idolises Maradona, his legendary performances, his anti-colonial stance, and his working-class struggle, while disparaging the Africanness of others, despite it being part of the very heritage that shaped one of its most celebrated icons.
