EU demands Meta change Facebook and Instagram algorithms due to risks for children.

The European Commission has published preliminary findings from a two-year investigation into the operations of Facebook and Instagram, reports Reuters.

The regulator concluded that a number of Meta's mechanisms, including the infinite scroll, autoplay video, and recommendation algorithms, may contribute to excessive and even compulsive use of social media, particularly among children and teenagers.

Brussels emphasizes that the company has not adequately assessed the risks to users and has not offered effective mechanisms to mitigate them.

The European Commission is demanding that Meta disable autoplay video and the infinite scroll by default, introduce mandatory breaks in app usage, and change the recommendation algorithms to make them less focused on maximizing user engagement.

If the violations are officially confirmed, the company could face a fine of up to 6% of its global annual turnover.
