⭕️With this video, Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs claimed - and the court agreed - that Mzia Amaglobeli committed the offense of resisting, disobeying, and insulting police officers, which, according to their claim, led to her arrest on administrative charges.

⭕️However, it has been proven by several experts, witnesses, and pieces of evidence that this video was recorded after she had already been released from administrative detention - just a few minutes before she was arrested on criminal charges.

⭕️The video shows the clashes and stampede that were triggered by the police staging arbitrary and violent arrests of Mzia Amaglobeli’s relatives, who had arrived at the scene after learning about Mzia’s administrative detention and were there to pick her up upon release.

⭕️The video was recorded on January 12 at 00:43, while Mzia had been detained on administrative charges on January 11 at 22:58.

💢At Batumi City Court, Judge Nino Sakhelashvili — who does not hold qualifications in criminal law — continues to preside over the case of Mzia Amaglobeli. On January 14, with only two months remaining in her judicial term, Judge Sakhelashvili ordered Amaglobeli’s pre-trial detention. The decision was widely criticized as lacking legal justification and has been described by legal observers as politically motivated. Shortly afterward, Sakhelashvili was appointed to a lifetime position on the bench.

@MAmaghlobeli is the co-founder and CEO of Gazeti Batumelebi, a Georgian independent media organization with a 24-year history. The organization operates two online media outlets, Batumelebi and @Netgazeti. Amaglobeli is currently facing criminal charges that carry a potential sentence of four to seven years in prison.

The charges stem from a brief incident in which Amaglobeli allegedly slapped the Batumi police chief with her left hand — considered her non-dominant hand — after he had made a false accusation against her relatives, claiming they had insulted police officers. This accusation was used as the basis for dozens of arbitrary arrests, including Amaglobeli’s own initial detention. The case is widely viewed by media freedom advocates as politically motivated.

Her arrest comes amid a broader context of increasing pressure on independent media in Georgia, including legislative initiatives targeting critical outlets. Observers have described the case as part of a growing pattern of media persecution.

🟥 “During the Soviet repressions, people were executed without even standing trial. At least my court hearing is happening - so what if it’s just a formality? I have nothing to complain about,” Mzia Amaglobeli told the judge Nino Sakhelashvili during her criminal case hearing.

The criminal case proceedings were postponed to March 31 at 1 PM.

🔴 Later judge Salikh Shainidze found Mzia Amaglobeli an “offender” in an administrative case for putting up a poster on January 11. The judge ruled her guilty of “disobeying a lawful police order and insulting police officers” - without any evidence. Meanwhile, video footage showed her being arrested while simply putting up the poster.

Today, the judge will decide on her pre-trial detention. Amaglobeli was arrested on January 12 and has been unjustly held in pre-trial detention since then.

🟥 On the 38th day of her hunger strike, unjustly detained co-founder and CEO of Batumelebi and @netgazeti, @MAmaghlobeli, announces the end of her strike and urges other political prisoners to do the same.

⭕️Amaglobeli's letter:
"In the wake of the tragedy in #Batumi’s Dream City, where two minor children fell into a trench and lost their lives, it is incredibly difficult for me to hear the public’s concerns for my health and life.

With the help of doctors, I will try to resume my nutrition in the coming days. I sincerely thank prisoners of conscience Temur Katamadze and Nikoloz Javakhishvili for their solidarity and ask them to end their hunger strike as well.

I feel a deep sense of responsibility toward my associates, colleagues, friends, and family. I do not want my hunger strike to weaken you - you must continue to fight on my behalf as well!".

⭕️ On February 1, 🇬🇪President @Zourabichvili_S visited Batumelebi's editorial office, where she gave an in-depth interview to the outlet. Zourabichvili also met with the media team and was hosted by the now-infamous newsroom cat, News, the office resident of imprisoned journalist and media founder @MAmaghlobeli.

⭕️Amaglobeli has been on a hunger strike for 23 days. International and local organizations, as well as legal and media watchdogs, have assessed her imprisonment as politically motivated in connection with her media work.

⭕️ Currently, over 50 individuals have been imprisoned on criminal charges related to #GeorgiaProtests, including people from various fields such as art, theater, medicine, and journalism. Most face prison sentences ranging from 2 to 9 years. Amaglobeli is facing a sentence of 4 to 7 years for allegedly attacking a police officer - an incident in which she slapped Batumi Police Chief Irakli Dgebuadze during a tense and chaotic night when police carried out repressive arrests of 12 individuals.

🛑 January 30 marks the 19th day of @MAmaghlobeli’s hunger strike against injustice and repression. She is not just imprisoned - she is being held hostage for doing what journalists are meant to do: reporting the truth. For over 24 years, she has run independent media outlets in #Georgia with the highest journalistic standards. Now, she is paying the price for it.

🆘 Today, for the first time, her lawyers reported that she struggled to walk to the meeting area on her own. Nineteen days with nothing but water, and this was the first time her body visibly gave in. Yet, Mzia refuses to let her health become the focus - despite its rapid deterioration.

🛑 “No matter how bad she feels, she always insists she is well and in high spirits,” her lawyers said. One of the first messages she sent me from prison was clear: speak out about the brutal crackdown on the press in #Georgia. She wants the world to take action - before it is too late.

🆘 Mzia has been subjected to ill-treatment, degrading, and inhumane treatment by #Batumi police chief Irakli Dgebuadze, who remains in his position without consequence. There is no sign that investigators have even questioned him, spoken to eyewitnesses, or recovered video footage from the detention facility where she was abused. The case is not even being investigated under the proper legal charge - ill-treatment. Worst of all, Mzia has not been granted victim status.

🛑 How is this not an urgent priority for the global press community?

How much longer will journalists stand by as another country falls into a Russian-style authoritarian grip? How long do you plan to keep “observing” before reporting on this grave and urgent crisis?
