On behalf of Canada, I made the sacrifice of flying on a FULL Air Canada plane from Vancouver to Honolulu.

Apparently I wasn’t the only Canadian making this sacrifice.

Made sure to keep my elbows up and push the policies Canadians expect.

Asked shops why they didn’t have Pride stickers in their windows.

Why the bathrooms were clearly marked men or women. No guessing required.

And why the Pride Parade was only a short period on a Saturday during “shoulder season.”
Only part of one day? Not a whole month?

Had conversations with former military. Made sure they knew we were Canadian.
They still wanted to talk to us.

Americans were even offering condolences to our military from Wainwright. They’d seen it on their socials and in the news.

There I was, keeping my elbows up, and they had to go and show they cared.

Asked why their gasoline was about the same price as Vancouver when they have to import all their oil.

Wondered why I wasn’t seeing open drug use on the streets and beaches.
Where was all the “safe supply”?

People were friendly and talkative. Especially in stores.
They actually offered to help.
Orders were correct.

Made sure to keep my elbows up. Can’t let this kind of treatment weaken my commitment.

Drivers must have known we were Canadians in our rental. They even gave us room on the roads.

I’ll keep investigating from the beach.

I have paid government taxes and into so-called ‘pensions’ for 56 years. Still paying.

In 1970 at 16 years old when governments first started taking a portion of my earnings, I had no idea the money would be wasted, stolen, sent abroad to support unjust but profitable wars, sent to people who hate us – or used to destroy the Western-Christian foundations of Canada.

Had I known, I would have left for the United States or elsewhere while I was still young. Many friends did exactly that in their early 20s. I stayed.

Now I’m told I am a White oppressor and a boomer responsible for the country’s decline. Two or more generations - recent arrivals and younger Canadians raised in the public schools - have been taught to see me that way. To ridicule, despise and even to hate me.

It does not matter that I worked at Stelco and then as a Toronto police officer, that I carried the bodies of friends killed in service of Canada - or that my own multiple injuries on duty and months in hospital mean I have not been able to walk normally and without pain since 1982.

It does not matter that my family has been in Canada since at least 1703, were pioneers on the prairies, or that by Royal declaration of the King - I, my children, grandchildren and all succeeding generations are forever are honoured with the post-nominal ‘U.E.’

It does not matter that I raised three children, the last ten years entirely on my own until they were adults, and that all three turned out well. My four grandchildren are joys. I am so proud of each and all of them.

None of that counts. I am White, male, 72 and a legacy Canadian. That is what matters.

So I am expected to get down on my knees and thank @MarkJCarney for an extra ten dollars a month, while begging forgiveness for my sin of being here since 1703.

Except I don’t get a Groceries and Essentials benefit cheque and we don’t qualify for qualify for child care, dental care, other national school food program because we have private insurance and don’t have kids.

Barely shows up in Parliament? “He’s a busy man.” Zero improvement in the economy? “These things take time.” deliberately Tanks the Trade Deal with the biggest trading partner we have? “He had no choice”. Signs a secret security deal with China that nobody in Parliament is allowed to see? “Well we need to diversify”. Lies about his intentions with the EU? “Well it serves the US right.”
