At its heart, a supermassive black hole feeds on surrounding gas and dust, powering an active galactic nucleus that shines across the spectrum. The arms themselves are crowded with newborn stars, glowing clusters, and lanes of dust that trace the galaxy’s slow rotation.

This composite draws on both the James Webb Space Telescope and Hubble. Webb’s infrared view peers through the dust to reveal warm regions where stars are still forming, while Hubble picks out the sharp blue clusters and fine structure of the arms in visible light. Side by side, the two telescopes show a galaxy in motion: gas collapsing into stars, arms winding around a brilliant core, and a black hole quietly shaping the light we see.
