@bryan_caplan I think a better standard for honesty is judging your communication's impact on the audience's internal world model. Literally true statements often mislead and increase likelihood they think untrue things.
@theepicmap It does amaze me how much less noticeable the smog cloud is when hiking mountains near the city compared to the same hikes as a child. Just another way the world is quietly slowing getting better.
@jackcalifano Society is richer and so bid up price of exclusive goods more. Also, more socially acceptable for artist to capture value instead of scalpers.
@eigenrobot Would be funnier if he was instinctively sexually traditional but math said his 'reach' expanded by a couple of orders of magnitudes with the sex cult which swamped the 'persuasion' hit so he reluctantly embraced it
@VK_HM To be publishable (or go viral) it needs to sell. For it to sell, it needs either 1) well written, or 2) underserved audience. So you'll find inverse correlation *in published works* between 'quality' and 'unique conceit.' But any genre *can* be well written, including LitRPG
@TlH23853021@Benedicta_Bee If you're thinking of assumptions that must hold, there's a rough order of
God > Abrahamic > Christian > Mormon.
Logically consistent to define demarcation point of 'acceptable number of contradictions' higher up the chain.
@TlH23853021@Benedicta_Bee Yes-ish. Mormonism though has all the failure points of Christianity (see what I did there! ) AND added on many falsification points. Mathematically, it *must* be less probable than more generic belief in God.
@Birdyword Is there a simple way to do this without being ad hoc? Cost per hour of entertainment seems plausible but many products used for entertainment have very hard time determining duration.
@tracewoodgrains After a few decades of losing members, they'll change strategy. And much like on a dating website, highlighting your unusual aspects gets you more matches. 'Deep Doctrines' can be that unusual niche for LDS church.
@tracewoodgrains I suspect in another decade or two the LDS church will officially embrace the term Mormon again. Seems like it was just one guy's pet peeve & long term they'll get more membership embracing the unusual aspects, they'll never outcompete Protestants at being generic Christians.
@pres_johntaylor@mrwittmayer 1) is pretty easy to show with data. Here's two ways: independent survey data, see next tweet for a link. Or you can use info the LDS church publishes, either number of missionaries or baby blessings, adjust for declining birth rates, and you'll see #of adults ~ constant.
@RichardHanania Mostly, you can resolve this question by asking an LDS person if the fundamentalist polygamous groups are Mormon (they typically get offended when media calls them Mormon polygamists).
