🧵Partners In Health (PIH) denounces the acts of violence and harm inflicted upon Haitian people and urges everyone to avoid racist tropes and explanations.

Join me tomorrow at Noon ET for a special two-hour livestream on the Vlogbrothers YouTube channel!
Dr. Joia Mukherjee from @PIH will join me for the first hour. We’ll talk about why (and how) PIH does what it does.
We’ll also be honoring Nerdfighter Amit who passed away late last year. He asked that $28,000 of his life insurance be donated to PIH as a match to be met by Nerdfighteria. There will be a link to match his donation during the stream.
See you tomorrow and DFTBA!
Beaucoup d'optimisme quant aux progrès réalisés à ce jour dans la lutte contre les MTN! Modération par @MarkBrender, avec les panélistes Kristin Rodrigues, Brian Bedard & Abdikadir Dakane #NonAuxMTN
🌐 @MarkBrender, National Director of Partners in Health Canada, challenges the sustainability myth in international development. Demands for sustainability may perpetuate inequalities.

700 Jewish Canadians: We mourn, but our mourning is not a reason to commit atrocities on the Palestinian people. We test our humanity at the most difficult times – we do not respond to atrocities by committing atrocities on a larger scale. Read letter: https://t.co/3EoGSSvFm1 1/8
As chair of the Canada-Palestine Parliamentary Friendship, I worked with vice-chairs @alexboulerice and @ElizabethMay to send a letter from 33 MPs to the Prime Minister demanding Canada support a cease fire to save innocent civilian lives in Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid.
I wouldn't say "novelist's campaign" so much as a "global multiyear campaign by TB activists belatedly joined by a novelist," but still: More coverage of the deal between GDF and @JNJNews: https://t.co/alAqObQMFw
@HarjitSajjan@MarciIen@CanWaCH@AustinMarleigh: "We recognize that medical care is only part of what is required to usher in a new era of global health and gender equity, but in our experience, adequate and sustained investment in clinical deserts has never failed to lead to real and positive change." /3

So you don't get to go.
You're doing amazing work in a country plagued by gang violence that needs more people fighting GBV, and you don't get to go...because the colonial power (and many other countries) won't let you pass through.
How infuriated would you be?
Visa follies 2023:
Canada, the US, and France (to name just three) decide who goes to a women’s rights conference in Rwanda by decreeing who is worthy of travelling through their countries to get there.
Or not worthy.
Like, say, our Haitian colleague.
And the routing doesn't work.
You can go through France, but you have to change airports so need a visa. Visa denied.
So let's try the Netherlands (good connection, no leaving airport) and then Panama...but it only works to overnight in Panama City. Visa required. No time.
(you know what this whole thing also is: a BIG warning to the folks who make certain TB diagnostics, for which the price gouging is unconscionable, that if they don't quietly lower prices, they will end up regretting it. That's right. We're not done. Just getting started.)
Now from @PIH, who are "cautiously optimistic," but @JNJNews needs to make "the details of the Stop TB deal public." Yes!
Leading NGOs have been able to make statements. @JNJNews has 120,000 employees; they can't get one to write a press release? https://t.co/DCOvRrIUqF
I want to be clear that while I think our pressure may have affected the timing, this must have been in the works for a while. The real heroes here aren't us but the Stop TB Partnership and other activists who've been working for YEARS to get to this moment. You rule. THANK YOU.
