UPDATE: Senatobia, Mississippi Police Chief Harold “Hal” Vanderford was fired after reports revealed racist text messages attributed to him. Vanderford submitted a resignation, but the Senatobia Board of Aldermen rejected it and voted unanimously to terminate him.

Vanderford led the Senatobia Police Department, the same department involved in the fatal June shooting of 1-year-old Kohen Wiley. The available reporting does not establish that the racist messages were directly connected to Wiley’s death.

When racist language is attributed to the leader of a police department, the public has every reason to question that department’s culture, judgment, and accountability.

Racism within police leadership is not separate from public safety—it is central to the public’s ability to trust the people sworn to protect them.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate the shooting that killed Kohen Wiley. Stay tuned for continued updates as they become available.
