@bev_a @mtclarke the 2 bankruptcies differed re when they occurred in the sales cycle... Bev is right that R represented greater risk for publishers... publishers who agreed to make R customers whole then became creditors... a few years later creditors did get about 50 cents on the $...

@RickyPo @paul_abrahams The irony of that deal was that Mead wanted to concentrate on its paper business while Reed (also originally a paper co) had made the decision that information was more strategic than trees… your main point though that database technology (& bringing that to Elsevier) was key…
