It’s official!
@BarhamSalih, former President of Iraq, has been elected as the next High Commissioner for Refugees.
Having been a refugee himself, he brings powerful lived experience to lead UNHCR.
We’re excited to welcome him soon. 💙
@FilippoGrandi: "There is a remarkable opportunity for Syria to move toward peace... Patience and vigilance will be necessary, hoping that developments on the ground will evolve in a positive manner, allowing voluntary, safe and sustainable returns"

Syria is at a crossroads between peace and war, freedom and lawlessness, prosperity and misery.
For its refugees, the watershed is between repatriation and the continuation of exile.
It all depends on a peaceful transition, respecting the lives and aspirations of all Syrians.
Sweden’s flexible, multi-year and predictable funding ensures we stay agile and ready to respond to complex crises like in Ukraine, Sudan and Lebanon.
Our close and trusted partnership with Sweden 🇸🇪 provides vital safety and protection to millions of forcibly displaced people.
Early and predictable funding commitments mean we can better plan and deliver life-saving support.
With Germany reaffirming its strong partnership with UNHCR, we rely on this support to provide sustainable responses for those most in need.

This month, I’ve seen the life-changing impact of donor support for displaced people in Chad and Syria.
Grateful for Member States’ strong response at today’s Pledging Conference, announcing a record $1.14 billion in early support for refugees and displaced people in 2025. 🙏
We rely on our strong partnership with the European Union and its leadership to mobilize a collective response in the coming years, including through essential humanitarian and development funding to support displaced and host communities.
🙏 @eu_echo@EU_Partnerships 🇪🇺
Extraordinary support from @StatePRM & the American people made a difference in addressing multiple emergencies in 2024.
As needs show no signs of decreasing, we look forward to continuing to work together to protect, empower and find solutions for refugees worldwide in 2025.
From emergency relief to shelter assistance and protection, continued support from @MofaJapan_en and the Japanese people helps us save lives, contribute to recovery efforts, and bring hope to millions forced to flee their homes.

UNHCR is very good at delivering basic household items quickly to people fleeing conflict and violence. But these relief items come at an environmental cost.
Working with @ifrc & @ICRC, @refugees is introducing greener emergency items.
Target: 20% drop in CO₂ by 2025.
Luxembourg 🇱🇺 has a longstanding tradition of welcoming refugees and has set an advanced model of support for UNHCR — from predictable funding to digital innovation and aligning humanitarian & development aid.
This week’s exchanges reaffirmed how critical our partnership is.
No escape.
Our report launched today at #COP29 shows 3/4 of the 120 million forcibly displaced people globally are in countries with high to extreme climate impacts.
But these countries receive only a small % of climate financing.
This must change.

Unearmarked funding from top donors like @SweMFA, @NorwayMFA, @FCDOGovUK, @DanishMFA and @DutchMFA is crucial for UNHCR to act immediately in emergencies.
In Lebanon, this support ensures vital assistance and legal counselling reach those in need, right when they need it most.
Adre, Chad is a border town of 40,000 that now hosts 230,000 new arrivals from Sudan in a sprawling informal settlement.
Refugees wait here to be relocated to sites with shelters and essential services, but more resources are urgently needed to respond to the growing numbers.
