To be silent the whole day long, see no newspaper, hear no radio, listen to no gossip, be thoroughly and completely lazy, thoroughly and completely indifferent to the fate of the world is the finest medicine a man can give himself.

Fall is bulking season.

As winter approaches, black bears at Shenandoah National Park are busy packing on the pounds. Acorns are a favorite fall food, providing a calorie-rich feast that helps bears build fat reserves before heading to their dens.

Bulk. Nap. Repeat.

For many Arizona voters, the top concern heading into the midterms isn't inflation, immigration or education.

Instead, it's water.

With the state gripped by prolonged drought, candidates are facing growing questions about how to secure its water future. @TheStephSy reports for our series, Tipping Point.

I would like to thank all those who have prayed for me in recent days. I wish to express my particular gratitude to the doctors, nurses and all the staff of the Gemelli Hospital. This experience has made me feel particularly close to all those who are living with illness or infirmity. Now that I have overcome this delicate phase I will gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers.

Pope Leo XIV announced Sunday he will undergo surgery "in the coming days" to remove a nodule on his lung, in the first major health event of his 17-month pontificate. https://t.co/bxLwThGh0k

[Pope Leo XIV @Pontifex]

Dear friends, during some recent medical examinations, the doctors found a small, localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well-localized. The doctors believe that it is best to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it. The operation is already scheduled to take place in the coming days. I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers.

[Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський @ZelenskyyUa]

Wishing His Holiness Pope Leo XIV @Pontifex a successful surgery and a swift, full recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with him, and we hope he will soon be back in good health and strength.

Ukraine is deeply grateful to His Holiness for his prayers and his strong, consistent calls for a dignified and durable peace.

"What distinguishes our species is thought. The cerebral cortex is in a way a liberation. We need no longer be trapped in the genetically inherited behavior patterns of lizards and baboons: territoriality and aggression and dominance hierarchies. We are each of us largely responsible for what gets put into our brains. For what as adults we wind up caring for and knowing about. No longer at the mercy of the reptile brain, we can change ourselves. Think of the possibilities."

- Carl Sagan
