For decades, federal Pell Grants have helped millions of students from low- and middle-income families afford college.

Now, for the first time, that financial aid will also be available for short-term vocational training programs designed to help students enter the workforce.

@TheStephSy reports on the rollout of Workforce Pell for our series, Rethinking College.

With the new school year underway, millions of American parents are gearing up to cheer on their kids in sports — not necessarily for their school’s team, but for one of the thousands of travel or club teams that have cropped up across the country.

Roughly 5 million kids are competing on these private teams, and many benefit from that participation, including some who get college scholarships.

But youth travel sports also come with increasing costs and challenges. Those trade-offs and concerns are getting more attention.

@TheStephSy spoke with Tom Farrey, the founder and executive director of the Aspen Institute’s Sports & Society Program.

Just over three years ago, the deadliest U.S. wildfires in more than a century devastated the Hawaiian island of Maui. New research suggests the toll of the disaster may be far greater than the lives lost and property burned.

@TheStephSy reports on a landmark study aiming to track how the wildfires continue to affect survivors' health long after the flames are gone.

[PBS News @NewsHour]

More than three years have passed since the deadliest wildfires to hit the U.S. in more than a century swept through Lahaina, on the island of Maui.

The fires consumed thousands of structures, killed 102 people and destroyed an important site of Hawaiian history.

Hundreds of homes have been rebuilt and permits for hundreds more have been approved. But, as @TheStephSy reports, many residents remain in limbo.

One of the deadliest forms of cancer for women may not start where we once believed.

Researchers now know nearly all fatal ovarian cancers begin in the fallopian tubes, not the ovaries.

@TheStephSy discusses with Dr. Rebecca Stone, a professor in the Johns Hopkins Medicine Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, how this understanding is important for patient care.

Today, after more than four years of detention in Russia, Robert Gilman is on his way home to be reunited with his family. Mr. Gilman joins over 100 Americans whom President Trump has freed during his second term in office.

We thank Russia for working with Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to release Mr. Gilman and allowing him to receive the necessary medical treatment here in the United States.

While we appreciate this positive step, we are still seeking the immediate return of all other unjustly detained Americans, including wrongful detainee Stephen Hubbard. The President will not stop until all unjustly detained Americans are home.

[Stephanie Sy @TheStephSy]

He was released on humanitarian grounds. We are told there was no prisoner exchange.

[Stephanie Sy @TheStephSy]

@pbsnewshour can confirm that Gilman has been released. He is in rough shape but can speak.

[PBS News @NewsHour]

The family of a U.S. Marine veteran imprisoned in Russia says his health is rapidly deteriorating and that he may be on the brink of death. They are pleading for his release.

Robert Gilman was first arrested in Russia in 2022 for allegedly hitting a Russian police officer. Gilman was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison, but that sentence has since been extended to a decade.

The PBS family is mourning the passing of one of its own, Sylvia Bugg.

She most recently served as chief programming executive and general manager for general audience programming.

In a statement, @PBS CEO Paula Kerger said Bugg helped shape the programming "that defines our service to the American people."

Kerger added that Bugg "will be gratefully remembered for her commitment to ensuring public media's programming reflects a broad range of voices and perspectives."

Bugg was a dedicated and passionate leader, and a staunch supporter of our team at the News Hour.

She died unexpectedly over the weekend at the age of 55.

Top Israeli officials have expressed dismay and even derision for the initial agreement between the U.S. and Iran. The deal does not include the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon, where Israel continues to fight Hezbollah despite a ceasefire that neither side is honoring.

Now, Israelis say they’re caught in the middle of a bad deal and constant fighting.

Tax Day, the deadline for filing your taxes, is Wednesday. President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers are trying to draw voters' attention to new tax cuts and increased deductions approved last year.

But with the war, higher gas prices and other economic costs, some polls suggest many Americans don't feel they're benefiting much from the new law.
