In 2020 at Rally, we tried to buy Notorious BIG’s crown at Sotheby’s.
A mystery bidder was going over the top *aggressively* on every bid, so we stopped at $575K (it sold for 595)
6 months later, we found out Jay-Z was that bidder from this photoshoot of his daughter...
Back then, celebs and entertainers "overspending" on artifacts was NOT the norm, but thats where this space and these objects are now headed.
The Jay-Z's of the world have the money, the understanding of significance in culture, and the risk profile to make bets *today* that everyone will be making in the future.
its already happening. But in the next 5 yrs, the most important 90s and 2000s objects are going to be more relevant (and more valuable) wealth signals than anything else.
Sometimes people send me basketball cards to autograph (address below) and I do my best to return one to everyone. I do sometimes keep extras, because I don’t have very many- they don’t give players boxes of their own cards. Sometimes I even buy some if I see a deal on eBay. What do I do with these extra cards? Yesterday, we arrived at @ClearwtrYchtClb & they were hosting an event for the Arc Tampa Bay Foundation. No one here really knows me from Adam, but they do know I’m tall, they do know about the #NBA and they were happy to get an autographed NBA basketball card, so THANK YOU to everyone who sent me extra cards I could give to these great people! Dr J visited the Hall of Excellence in Las Vegas.
Many game worn items are on exhibit, mainly from the pre “highlight” era.
Historic objects. Not really Cultural Property.
Comes down to the curator and the era they appreciate. In this case, Jim Gray and Tom Brady were the curators.
I make card cabinets now.
Ones that hold 36 4 row boxes.
Ones that hold 24 5 rows.
Even little 7 drawer options that hold 14 4 rows.
But what's better? I can make ones that fit you, for your cards. So you never drop a box again.
