Hey @jenny_rooney -- I’m a journalism/communication student at UW-Madison who’d like to follow a career path like yours. What do you wish you’d known as a 200-level student? #j202

@adler_maddy I think it is a breach of privacy in many cases, like when I am texting about getting Panera for dinner and then an add pops up. that is too much. however, when I am shopping for clothes and similar websites come up on instagram, I don't think that is too much and it is helpful
@jacksonadrien13 this is an interesting point and I agree that it is concerning. One argument for the credibility of doctors is at that point in time, they weren't aware of the harms of cigarettes. However, they also don't know the extent and potential harms of COVID vaccines bc they are so new
Today in lecture, we learned about persuasion versus manipulation. Do you think you are more persuaded or manipulated by advertisements? what is an example of any manipulation you believe you have fallen for recently? #UWJ201 #310
@kymcoolidge1 Social media seems to highlight those extremely conservative or extremely liberal and focuses less on the moderate side. Therefore, a negative to looking at social media data is that the journalists will gather more extreme points instead of the majority sentiment of moderation.
@HallieClaflin I agree with your statement that the orginazational pressures really are harming our society. Journalists are pressured to produce "worthy" stories This can lead them to leave out stories that may still be relevant as well as dramatizing stories to make people engage more.
We have learned about civic journalism as well as the criticisms of this type of coverage. Do you believe journalists can properly grasp the concerns of communities? Why or why not do you believe journalists are capable of letting us know the communities beliefs ? #UWJ201 #310
@mariathestar01 I believe it could be detrimental if media companies cancelled out groups who they just didn’t agree with their opinions on. It is important in a democracy that all sides are heard. However, i believe it is fair to cancel information that can potentially cause harm. #UWJ201 #310
@Charlot83688533 I believe that because these platforms are private businesses, they do have rights to regulation. However, because they are becoming public squares of information, there should be some limit and they should provide an explanation for deplatforming #UWj201 #310
We have learned about the diminishing of local news (the most trusted source). In The NY Times article they have stated Facebook and Google have killed many local newspapers. Do you think this is a negative, as people now read increasingly filtered and public media? #UWJ201 #310
@ZiebellTaylor I don’t know the answer to this question, but It is crucial more minorities voices are heard. Obviously if we are just hearing from white people’s perspectives, we are not seeing the full story of our country and gaining the full sense on an issue. #310 #UWJ201
@ZentMaya Although this seems like a strange concept, I believe it would help our country. By financing small outlets, we could get more people’s opinions and see we aren’t as divided as we thought we are. It would also help more people to be informed of what is happening #310 #UWJ201
Curran believes media should be a central place of different groups mending. However, when looking at the comments of news pages people are arguing mercilessly and there is an increasing divide between democrats and republicans. Why do you think this is happening? #UWJ201 #310

@ZGuderyon Genuinely I was surprised sports weren’t as high up in importance or interest. Just being a college town for such a love for sports and in “normal” years seeing the streets in a sea of red made me believe sports would be more widely promoted on the news. #J201 #310
@LogaLindsey It becomes even more clear to me that geographic locations show such a difference when learning local news is so popular. People are being fed widely different information on so many issues from these stations and it makes me realize their thoughts are obviously so different #310
in the Pew Study, the highest thing of importance and easy access in Madison is weather. Weather is important in Madison because we have life altering weather in the winter. At home on the east coast where weather is less extreme, it is ranked substantially lower #UWJ201 #310
@IngwellCristina I agree with this statement and actually have learned about the war between Israel and Lebanon in a previous course. It makes us realize how media outlets have exacerbated these tensions, creating more hostility and tension in our democracy. #UWJ201 #310
