Our last words are never final... they're actually a new beginning.
There are millions of people, who never got the chance to receive the 'last words' from their loved ones. They watched them fight through pain and suffering they had no control over. They helped, hoped, & tried to heal them until they could go no longer. One of the most heartbreaking concepts one has to accept when losing that person, is the constant curiosity of what their last words would've been to us. And this isn't just about loss in death, but loss of connection, identity, and presence, too.
What Eric Dane has given millions of people, is a gift he may not have even realized was THIS poignant. It resonates on a level that cuts immediately through the heart and straight to soul. His words, his suggestions, memories, and dedication to expressing his love, while battling his flesh is something we all needed to witness.
It's an incredibly heavy, but also, an enlightening reminder of how human and vulnerable we all are. A reminder of how impactful, the love, lessons, & memories are. A reminder that regardless of our mistakes and flaws, we have the opportunity to create a footprint of comfort, confidence, and compassion in everything we do. And we haven't been doing it enough.
Grief doesn't end. It's unforgiving as f*ck and anyone who has lost someone they loved, could barely swallow while even thinking of their last moment with them. It doesn't get better. It actually gets worse; we just start getting avoidant or seek new ways to process and grow around it. That's the ugly truth that we don't say out loud enough. Grief is actually the experience of two losses; no one ever gives us condolences for the version of ourselves that we lost. We lose an entire life and emotional vault of routines, holidays, smells, touches, and experiences we had with them. The more we live without them, the more we have to navigate and redefine who we are without them. That pain becomes just as debilitating as losing the person. Now we don't have them or who we were while they were here.
There are no instructions. There is no cure. And that's what makes the grief of life and/or love, so eternally heavy no matter how long you experienced it. To try and erase or deny it, is a disservice to the effort of your heart.
His message should be a shift to wake us up, and feel more confident in honoring the love we have gained and lost. We should be more proud and loud about transforming grief into an energy, resource, or creative outlet that can be enjoyed and admired.
We earn the grief that we walk around with. Our bodies may stop functioning, but the love and moments of joy we receive remains in every cell of our being.
Our longevity & abilities are not, and were never promised to us. It's dangerous to live, plan, and assume based on numbers or diagnoses. Complacency, is what ultimately starves us of the inspiration we need to keep going. It's critical to indulge in our humanity, wonder, and kindness now more than ever. It's essential to find something to live for, even if it's yourself.
Let this intentional exchange of life, love, and vulnerability, be the spark you need to remember why you're here. Let us all live better, do better, and love better today.
James Van Der Beek’s final message to the world is one of the most powerful things I have ever heard. Stop whatever you are doing and listen to this! 🥺
