አቢይ አሕመድ በ2013-2015 ዓም የትግራይን ምእመናን ሲጨፈጭፍ፣ ሲያሳድድ፣ አብያተ ክርስቲያናትዋን ሲያወድም፣ ካህናትዋንም ሲገድል የኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ተዋሕዶ አባቶች፣ ዲያቆናት፣ ማህበረ ቅዱሳንን ጨምሮ ማህበራት፣ ታዋቂ ሰዎች ዝም ጭጭ ነበር ያሉት ። ቁጥራቸው ቀላል ያልሆኑት ደግሞ “አበጀህ የኛ ልጅ” እያሉ ግፋ በለው ሲሉ ነበር።

በሉቃስ 18:2 “በአንዲት ከተማ እግዚአብሔርን የማይፈራ ሰውንም የማያፍር አንድ ዳኛ ነበረ።” እንደተባለ በዚህ ቁጥር እግዚአብሔርን የማይፈራ ሰውንም የማያፍር የቤተክርስቲያን “አገልጋይ” ይኖራል ብዬ በህልሜም በውኔም አስቤ አላውቅም ነበር።

His Holiness Patriarch Mathias of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church issued a statement from Washington, DC, where he has been since July 21, 2024, for medical follow-up, addressing the victims of the landslide destruction in Gofa Zone of Southern Ethiopia, which has resulted in 229 deaths.

Full statement:

"In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the One God, Amen!

"O LORD, how many are my foes! How many rise up against me! (Ps. 3:1)

We are deeply saddened by the death of a large number of our people in the landslide in Gofa Zone, Geze Gofa District, Kencho Shacha Gozdi Kebele. Though we are no strangers to suffering, we recognize that this particular hardship is difficult for both the speaker and the listener.

Despite our worries, we hope that God will bring us better times. As Christians, we mourn the loss of our people, but we believe in the resurrection of the dead and pray for the comfort of our departed children. In the name of God, we offer our paternal message, providing universal support to the local community enduring this suffering, and encouraging everyone to help as much as they can.

May God comfort the families and His people, and bless Ethiopia and its people!

The reason for his detainment is unclear. Cherinet is in #Ethiopia to be part of an AU youth summit.

A young peace & refugees advocate, Cherinet Alem Hariffo is a strong voice to all vulnerable victims. He is known to be understanding of #Ethiopian government and its officials much more than many of us who are their critics. His detainment is unjustified.

We call upon all officials and notable leaders, who Cherinet has met and discussed many issues with to be calling for his release.
