Rod Liddle, The Spectator's associate editor, has died at the age of 66.
Michael Gove, The Spectator’s editor, said: "Rod Liddle was a journalist of genius. In the tradition of Swift, Cobbett and Orwell, he was a satirist who found society’s most sensitive spots and made merciless fun of our follies.
"He was always fearless, could be achingly funny and while he had an adamantine core of principle he could also surprise. Because he was original – he thought for himself and never wanted anyone’s approval – he was special and brave.
"In person, Rod was kind and gentle. He was an indulgent boss and brilliantly creative editor at the BBC and an always steadfast and generous colleague. He had a deep love of England, of its culture and in particular the common sense of its working class.
"He was also a master of the written word. He was very much loved by those who knew him. And no words we can summon can capture our loss."

"That looks like love, but that is a loveless landslide."
@GaryGibbonC4 says Labour's "extraordinary achievement" of a landslide victory could come with one of its lowest shares of the vote.

I’m hardly the Peter Pan of politics profs, but it still amazes me to think that when these guys fought the Feb 1974 election they were younger than me! Come to our @MileEndInst event tomorrow to find out why they looked so ancient, among other things! https://t.co/jUkKRmpf1y
I wrote about the collapse of face-to-face socializing in in the 21st century.
From 2003-2022, American adults reduced socializing by 30%. For teens, the decline was nearly 50%. There is no record of any period in history when ppl spent more time alone.

I just don’t think it’s a good idea for the prime minister to be holding an interview. For them to be asking questions of someone else makes them look like a supplicant and undermines their big advantage over their opponents (that they are in power already).
But beyond work, @emilymorganitv was a cherished friend to many of us. Funny, engaging, kind, compassionate and she had a fantastic sense of humour.
We will all miss her in the office.
I will also miss the fun times.
It was an honour to have known Emily.
Rest in Peace x
