UEFA backing down on its boycott threat is self-evidently a victory for the FIFA president Gianni Infantino. And that’s a defeat for football. The widespread desire for Infantino to resign was not just about his shameful plan to sell off parts of the World Cup. The desire was to call to account a president enthralled by the rich and powerful, whose reign has seen political and commercial interference in football.
Take your pick of: Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami being parachuted into the Club World Cup; handing out a peace prize (that’s the Nobel Committee’s prerogative); the suspension of Cristiano Ronaldo’s ban so he was available for all the World Cup group stage for Portugal; and sponsored hydration breaks.
Any more? Yes. The phone-call from the White House that led to the review of Folarin Balogun’s ban; the loss of respected FIFA staff like Kevin Lamour; and the vote-winning plan to expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 which will kill qualifying, dilute further the quality of the tournament itself and reduce the number of nations that can host such a bloated event. And on it goes.
There could well be more now that UEFA appears a paper tiger. Infantino will be emboldened by Nyon’s retreat. Yes, it’s good for the players that the Women’s Under-20s World Cup in Poland goes ahead. They've worked hard to get there. It's not their fault that Infantino's actions plunged the sport into civil war. And the fact that FIFA tournaments are going ahead with a slightly sheepish European flock is particularly good for Infantino.
His supporters will be delighted. Those wavering may see UEFA blinking first and so throw their support behind Infantino. He now has more time to rebuild his support and ensure he gets voted back in when the presidential election is held in March. Four more years.
Any resistance movement within FIFA will surely melt quietly away, knowing that UEFA was not maintaining its initial, lauded firm stance. Pity. When the game needed strong, enlightened leadership to step forward, UEFA stepped back. Pity.
🚨 𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗕𝗟𝗘: A petition calling for Argentina to be EXPELLED from the World Cup has now gathered more than 23 MILLION signatures! 🤯✍️
The "Argentina Out" petition is now closing in on becoming the most-signed petition in history, with the current record standing at 24,319,181 signatures from 1997. 😳

England’s players aren’t the problem. They must take some responsibility but, really, they’re not the problem. A good group with some exceptional players. They have two of the top five scorers of this World Cup, Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, both world class. They have a winger in Anthony Gordon just bought by Barcelona who was troubling Argentina (and scoring) until taken off. A dynamic midfielder in Elliot Anderson bought for £116m who belied his relative youth to impress at his first senior tournament.
Another £100m+ midfielder in Declan Rice, who fought valiantly even when it looked like a brief illness and a long, intense season caught up with him. Saka, Rogers and some of the defenders like the hugely promising O’Reilly. Good players. A possession man in Kobbie Mainoo kicking his polished heels on the bench. Talents left behind like Wharton, Palmer, Foden, Alexander-Arnold, Scott and Gibbs-White. More coming through like Dowman. England have the players.
Listen to how outraged all the MPs are when they are told they shouldn't be allowed to drink unlimited discount booze at work.
It's time to get rid of this ridiculous benefit and all the MPs who support it.
Terribly old school and out of touch I may be, but I’ll never understand why managers don’t insist on subs having their full kit on and being ready to go on instantly if & when needed. Just have your shirt on pre game!! 🤦🏻♂️
Sheffield Wednesday haven’t dodged punishment, we’ve lived it and breathed it, for years.
Points deductions, transfer restrictions, stripped back squads, off-field chaos, and the worst season in the club’s history, all under an ownership model we as fans had zero control over. The damage wasn’t theoretical, it was real and it was brutal. It’s caused infighting, division and a complete loss of identity. We’ve been ridiculed beyond belief and we lost all pride in our football club.
Administration didn’t give us an advantage, it confirmed how far we’d already fallen. It was an escape from an owner who treat us with immeasurable disrespect.
A reset to zero isn’t leniency, it’s common sense. It’s the EFL recognising that you can’t keep punishing the same club, players and supporters for the same failure of one individual, over and over again.
We never asked for favours.
We asked for a level playing field. To be given the same opportunity as every other club in the league.

Wanted to take some time to reflect on a day I’ve been dreaming of for months.
Saturday was perfect. Will never be able to express how grateful I am for the warm welcome the @SWFC fans gave my family and me. The sun shone down on our wonderful club on Saturday.
It was the experience of a lifetime to enjoy the moment with you all…. To share our new crest designed by the incredible local agency Peter and Paul…. To share the news that after an incredible collaborative effort between my team, the @EFL and BTG we will start next season on zero points!…. To introduce you to our incredible new CEO, David Bruce…. And to witness over 30,000 of my newest friends singing for 99 minutes straight as our Owls closed out such a difficult season with a win.
I’d like to further highlight how grateful I am to the @EFL for their diligence and approach in working with us to ratify all issues and achieve our target of closing by 1 May.
It takes a village; but without the commitment and tenacity of Asher Simons, Clive Betts MP and James Silverwood in particular, we would not be where we are today.
It’s been an extremely emotional 48 hours for me after a long process, but now the focus is already completely on action. We are proceeding ahead immediately on all fronts and we will update you, the fans, as we go.
You are the reason Michael and I are here, the reason we have fallen in love with this city and this club. We will do everything in our power to ensure we don’t let you down.
David

BREAKING: Sheffield Wednesday under new ownership after takeover from Arise Capital Partners LLC 🚨
The club will receive no further points deduction next season in League One.
Love this from Sheffield Wednesday fans at Hillsborough today, the big screen counting down the point deduction for next season from -15 to 0.
It’s great to see them having something to cheer about after such a horrible season! 👏
