Another dark day for EU farming policy, and for democracy. Maddening and inexcusable, the slide away from democratic debate and ecological common sense continues...
Well said, sadly. This is quite monumentally bad. And simply wrong. Why should my tax go to farmers (and overwelmingly to big, rich farmers at that) with no green conditions attached? There is no good reason or justification. None.
The day the last green smoke screen blew away.
Direct payments are now officially just a way to transfer money from tax payers to the richest landowners with nothing in return.
Long time coming, but at least the whole greening the CAP farce is over.
When gastronomic traditions become global environmental problems we should abandon them. Whether it's ambelopoulia in Cyprus, polenta e osei in Italy, or frog legs in France https://t.co/GMZ6REGC35
Big day tomorrow. We need European politicians to do the right thing, pass the Nature Restoration Law unamended and send a signal to the whole world that the EU is prepared to do what it takes to restore nature.
If 'Farm to Fork' were a meal, we'd still be awaiting our starter, and pesticide reductions, animal welfare, and other things green would be 'off the menu, mate!' ://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2024/02/19/over-half-of-von-der-leyens-food-policy-promises-werent-met-analysis-shows
Dense Pine monoculture a big problem in Cyprus too. Should be prime target areas for restoration to more natural habitat (more species- including far less fire-prone broadleaved trees - and gaps)
Tree monocultures are a massive fire hazard. Getting worse with #ClimateCrisis We have plenty also in Europe. The forestry lobby loves them. We urgently need to start reconverting at least some of them to more resilient natural habitats and break their continuity.

With nature collapsing, clumping down on the few recovering species is profoundly wrong.
The anti wolf crusade is ideological, unscientific and polarising.
We need better support for fences, dogs, compensations etc. We don't need more dead wolves
🚨Breaking: we have a final deal on the Nature Restoration law!
While we are pleased to see that all ecosystems originally covered by the law are still included in the agreement, the articles have been watered down compared to the original Commission’s proposal and the Council’s position.
💪It is disappointing to see the many exemptions included, and the excessive flexibility regarding obligations for Member States.
The fight is not over yet: the agreement reached tonight will be voted on in the Parliament’s Environment Committee later this month.
So, stay tuned!

While farmland birds are disappearing due to the overuse of #pesticides, the 🇪🇸 presidency @eu2023es wants to allow these harmful toxics in sensitive areas and water down reduction targets.
Agriculture and Environment Ministers, we want you to protect our farmland birds, and the soundtrack of our landscapes!

CYPRUS BIRD TRAPPERS OUTSIDE THE LAW. This autumn has seen worrying signs of increased trapping with no government agency prepared to take responsibility for enforcement 1/4 https://t.co/zkBjDpCYwt
Twice a year, billions of migratory birds embark on the most epic journeys across the globe that nature has to offer.
Migratory birds reach impressive speeds, heights, and distances – but their travels are full of risk and danger. And human activities have made these journeys more treacherous and exhausting for birds.

⚠️Members and volunteers of the Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia (BPSSS @BirdLifeSerbia) are currently receiving a massive amount of hate and death threats on social media after reporting the illegal killing of migratory birds!
Up to 800 illegal calling devices for quails are placed every weekend in Serbia. The use of devices for mass destruction of wild birds is prohibited by the Serbian criminal code. Due to this form of illegal hunt, every year at least 50,000 quails are killed, inflicting massive damages to our biodiversity.
On the 9th and 10th of September 2023, members and volunteers of the BPSSS discovered electronical devices and found 3 armed Italian citizens carrying 8 freshly shot quails and no hunting or weapon permit. The discovery was immediately reported to the police.
The president of a local hunting society published on Facebook on the 12th of September a video in which he spread dangerous misinformation around the episode, spurring rage from the Serbian hunters and encouraging them to take their anger out on the activists. This resulted in more than 60 hate posts, including explicit death threats, against BPSSS' members.
🚨We strongly condemn the hate campaign and death threats, as well as the defence of illegality and ecological destruction.
We call on @SerbianGov authorities to act swiftly and decisively to protect our activists and preserve the #RuleofLaw
We urge @FACEforHunters to clearly reject such behaviour and act within the Serbian hunting community to restore peace, legality and dignity.
