Neurosurgeons must be mindful of the frequency of neuro checks we order.
Waking someone up every hour is not a benign intervention! Doing it to an elderly person with a TBI for days on end can perpetuate delirium. The results of this study in @NeurosurgeryCNS are not surprising.
There are some problems with the study, such as using neuro checks at admission as the exposure variable, but the authors do a good job with the data they have. It's a great reminder to think about how important that hourly neuro check really is! Be judicious in your orders and remember to do no harm!
