I have no idea why we’re discussing the sex life of Mary and Joseph, who have been dead now for nearly 2,000 years, but sure, I’ll chime in.
Matthew writes, “When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.”
Matthew 1:24-25
In other words, Joseph did not have sex with his wife, and she remained a virgin, until after Jesus was born.
So, even if you somehow reason away all the verses about Jesus’s brothers, Joseph knew his wife, and there was absolutely no sin in that.
God invented sex. Sex is not a sin.
Mary was a virgin until sometime after she gave birth to Jesus.
Mary was sexually pure and innocent of sexual sin for her entire life.
She was faithful to her husband, and he was faithful to her.
They were far better people than most of us, but they still needed Jesus to save them from their sins.
It is not sinful for wives to have sex with their husbands. A woman does not become less pure, less precious, less attractive, less admirable, or somehow “damaged goods” because she has loved her husband in the way God designed.
This idea that Mary would somehow be tainted, or be made less holy, simply because she loved her husband Joseph, is nowhere in Scripture.
It also does no favors to the girls in your life who aspire to be viewed with compassion and honor. In fact, I would say that it makes them more vulnerable to abuse. Because if they’re abused, why would they tell you about it? If they think that you’ll think they’re worth less now?
