#France has reported the first documented case of a human infection with #Shamonda virus, a virus only previously detected in animals.
The patient was immunocompromised, which made them more vulnerable to infection and severe disease, and unfortunately died. My heartfelt condolences to their loved ones.
Shamonda virus primarily affects animals such as cattle, sheep, goats and horses. The virus is thought to spread between animals by the bites of a midge, which is a small fly-like insect. Further studies are needed to fully understand transmission.
The French patient was in an area where the Shamonda virus was circulating in animals and where Culicoides midges were also present.
@WHO is in contact with French authorities who are collecting information to better understand the source of infection in the first human patient, possible routes of transmission and any potential risk to public health.
📘 Los casos de #sarampión continúan aumentando en las Américas. Para apoyar la respuesta de los sistemas de salud, la OPS publicó una guía sobre manejo clínico, prevención y control de infecciones.

Five years after its establishment, the @WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence has become an integral part of the global health security system.
Its new strategy charts a clear path towards 2030, uniting governments and partners around a shared goal: a world in which every country can rapidly respond to health threats before they turn into major crises: https://t.co/mzkvGU1IRM
A community can look well protected against measles on paper and still contain pockets where an outbreak can take hold.
New research analysing vaccination data from more than 50,000 US schools found that broader county averages often masked much lower coverage in individual schools.

The Government of #Kenya has reported imported case of #Ebola caused by Bundibugyo virus, in a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the #DRC. The patient became ill in DRC and received treatment in several hospitals, then travelled from DRC to Nairobi via Kampala, Uganda. He died in Nairobi yesterday. My condolences to his family and loved ones.
@WHO is supporting the governments of Kenya, the DRC, and Uganda in contact tracing, surveillance, screening, and other response measures to rapidly identify potential cases and prevent further spread of the virus.
WHO advises against any restriction of travel to, or trade with, the affected countries based on the currently available information. We continue to closely monitor and, where necessary, verify travel and trade measures in relation to this epidemic. https://t.co/bcksn5IzDT
Telehealth is transforming access to care, connecting patients with health workers and specialist services across distances, and helping bring quality health services closer to those who need them most.
In my remarks to the TeleHealth Connect Global Summit in Tunisia, I emphasized that telehealth and emerging technologies, like AI, must advance #HealthForAll, helping expand access while safeguarding equity, privacy and security.
With strong governance, interoperable systems and partnership, we can turn digital innovation into better health outcomes for all. Thank you #Tunisia for its leadership and for hosting this important meeting.
Outbreaks keep reminding us that health threats are real.
Stay tuned for #UNGA81 and discussions around the Pandemic Agreement.
