@tmwill8 @dr_s_bertrand I think that is an amazing idea for a project in your classroom. It ties in funds of knowledge, family background, and their culture. This is a great project that would really not only impact the students but their families as well!

@JuliaSp93293613 @dr_s_bertrand I definitely agree Julia! I think that making sure students know that their value and equality does not stop and start in the classroom. It is something that needs to be recognized as a part of their lives and something that they carry with them.

@EtnierShyann @dr_s_bertrand I love how you said you want to create a mirror or window for your students to see themselves through. I think that equal representation is one of the first things we need to do as educators to invoke change

@TibblesHayley @dr_s_bertrand I think it is important that you mentioned to represent your students year-round!! It's not just important during elections, it's not just important during protests, it's important always, and that's what needs to be recognized!

@_Tarah_L @dr_s_bertrand I 100% agree Tarah! Change starts with addressing the problem before making change! It is important to address the mistakes so we know how to change and how not to repeat history.

@anna_tonarelli @dr_s_bertrand I think eradicating the white-washed narrative is one of the biggest hurdles that we will have to jump when it comes to teaching SS in the classroom. But with equal representation of your students in a great first step towards that end goal!

@JSpitalli @dr_s_bertrand Having open dialogue creates an environment for pure honesty. And I think being honest with one another is the first step into equity.

@dr_s_bertrand A3. I will incorporate social justice, equity, and black excellence into my classroom by creating an environment that pushes for change. My classroom will be the place of the unexpected. I want to uplift my students of color and show them how much value they have in society (1/2)

@anna_tonarelli @dr_s_bertrand I read those shoes as my interactive read aloud for TCH 264. The students responses were honest and real. It was incredible to see what these students know and how much they can notice positive actions.

@EtnierShyann @dr_s_bertrand Hi Shyann! I have never heard of the book Peaceful Fights for Equal Rights, but after doing a quick search this looks like an amazing story! Along with sending a strong message it is also still relatable to the children.

@MsPalicka @dr_s_bertrand I also think that Grace for President is an excellent book that talks about the presidency. I think this would also be a very helpful book to use in a classroom now because of the recent elections

@dr_s_bertrand A2. The best way to incorporate social studies and literacy is through children’s lit. I think with the literature that is being created today creates such an uplifting and inclusive dialogue that gives the teacher the opportunity to address these topics. (1/2)
