Joint Statement from Metropolitan Police Department Chief Jeffery W. Carroll and the District of Columbia Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Francisco J. Diaz Regarding the Death of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham:

“The Metropolitan Police Department leads death investigations in the District of Columbia including the death investigation of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the District of Columbia’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME).

Senator Graham, 71, was pronounced at George Washington University Hospital at 10:23 p.m. on July 11, 2026, and an autopsy was performed on July 12, 2026.

OCME performed a complete examination of Senator Graham. As Senator Graham’s office shared with the public this afternoon via social media, OCME’s preliminary examination findings are aortic dissection due to arteriosclerosis cardiovascular disease. Whenever an autopsy is performed in the District of Columbia, the pathologist also orders comprehensive toxicology testing and microcopy both of which take time to complete. As soon as the results are available and the investigation concludes, OCME will communicate with the next of kin and the death certificate will be amended from pending to the cause of death and the classification of the manner of death.”

My heart is heavy this morning to learn of the passing of my friend and colleague, Senator Lindsey Graham.

Lindsey’s long and dedicated service in the Air Force and in Congress carried him to far-flung regions of the world. He was a strong advocate for the United States and a strong ally to freedom-loving countries across the globe. He believed in the might of America to achieve good in the world and dedicated his life to advancing that cause.

As South Carolina’s senior senator, Lindsey fought passionately for the Palmetto State. He was a trusted adviser and colleague to me and many others, and numerous presidents and heads of state have relied on his counsel. His influence on the federal judiciary, our national defense, and his beloved South Carolina will be felt for generations.

Kimberley and I pray for Lindsey’s friends and family, and we send our heartfelt condolences during this most difficult time.
