A large herd of Elephants narrowly escaped a major accident at Hawaipur in Hojai after forest workers and railway personnel acted swiftly to stop the speeding Down Rajdhani Express and allow the herd to safely cross the railway tracks.

The Remarkable Survival Instinct of Deer: When Mom “Gives the Order,” the Fawn Instantly Disappears
In the natural world, communication between a mother deer and her fawn requires almost no words. The mother primarily signals danger through body language — an alert posture and a sudden stop — sometimes combined with soft sounds or subtle actions. The fawn responds with an instinctive “hiding” reflex (the hider strategy), flattening itself against the ground to camouflage and minimize the risk of detection.
When sensing a threat from humans or predators, a mother deer (especially a white-tailed deer) typically freezes suddenly, stands still with ears raised, head held high, or stares directly toward the danger. Just a slight change in the mother’s posture is often enough for the fawn to freeze or drop to the ground immediately. If the threat passes, the mother may gently swish her tail from side to side as an “all-clear” signal. She also uses a soft, low “grunt” to call her fawn for nursing or to gather it. When more tense, she may snort, breathe heavily, or stomp her feet. In urgent situations, the mother may even deliberately lead the predator away to protect her young. After each nursing session, she usually nudges the fawn to lie down in a hiding spot and then deliberately moves some distance away (often about 100 yards) to avoid leaving her own scent behind.
The reason fawns drop flat to the ground stems from the survival strategy of “hider” species during their first few weeks of life (typically 1–3 weeks, known as the bed phase or hider phase). At this stage they cannot yet run as fast as their mother, so hiding is their best option.
Their white-spotted coat, with more than 300 spots, breaks up the outline of their body and helps them blend into the dappled light of the forest or the ground. Lying tightly against the earth with head and ears lowered makes them nearly invisible. At the same time, young fawns have almost no scent because their scent glands are not yet fully developed. The mother also thoroughly licks them clean and sometimes even consumes their droppings or the afterbirth to erase any traces. Remaining completely still prevents them from releasing scent or making noise.
Even more remarkably, when frightened they trigger a physiological response called alarm bradycardia: their heart rate drops sharply (by as much as 30–70%, from around 160–177 beats per minute down to 50–60), and their breathing slows or temporarily stops. This allows them to “freeze” completely, even if a threat approaches very closely. The mother deliberately stays apart — nearby enough to keep watch but not right beside the fawn — returning only a few times a day to nurse. If directly threatened, she may stomp, charge, or lead the predator away.
This strategy works best in the earliest days of life, when the fawn remains motionless for nearly the entire day. Later it shifts to the “flush” phase — staying hidden until danger comes very close, then bolting away at full speed. As it grows a bit older, it becomes a “follower,” staying close to its mother and relying on speed to escape.
