In 2022, I was going through a horrific mental health patch in Abuja. I wasn't eating, I wasn't picking up calls, and my apartment was a complete disaster.
One afternoon, a girl I was casually seeing let herself in with the spare key. She didn’t lecture me.
She didn’t try to 'fix' my mood. She just quietly walked into the kitchen, cleaned the mountain of dried dishes, and went downstairs to buy a single loaf of fresh bread and a tin of Titus sardines.
She mixed it in a plate, sat on the floor next to my bed, and fed me with her bare hands like a child while watching a random sitcom on her phone so I wouldn't feel pressured to talk.
She stayed for three hours, locked the door on her way out, and never brought it up again.
I realized we’ve been conditioned to think love is found in the grand, expensive 'Lekki luxury' dates.
But real love is someone willing to meet you at your absolute lowest, sit in the dirt with you, and make sure you’re fed without making you feel small for starving.
I looked at that empty plate of sardines and realized she'd be the one for me. 🥂
