Bacteria move around using a molecular machine called the flagellar motor that rotates faster than the flywheel of a race car engine and switches directions in an instant. After 50 yrs, scientists have finally figured out how it works. “My lifelong quest is now fulfilled.” Link⤵️
Please Ramez post also on other channels, at least for the most interesting stuff. For a lot of people this place is not nice anymore. I come back now and then to check but is painful.
Good Morning from #Germany, where butter prices have dropped to their lowest level since 2017. Discount retailers have cut the price of standard butter from €1.39 to €1.29, after it hit a record high of €2.39 last year. The fall is partly due to higher milk production, but it also reflects a price war between Aldi and Lidl in Germany as both fight to maintain their image as the country’s price leader. Supermarket prices had surged after the pandemic, but now there’s barely any difference between retailers when it comes to everyday staples.

Your regular reminder that there is actually a negative (albeit not quite significant) correlation between utility scale renewable additions and increases in electricity price across states over the past 24 years:
Inspired by the post on HN yesterday about running graph queries on Postgres with recursive CTEs, my coworker installed the SQL/PGQ patches locally and ported all the examples to this native graph query language coming (eventually) to Postgres!
On the heels of Humanity's Last Exam, @scale_AI & @cais have released a new very-hard reasoning eval:
EnigmaEval: 1,184 multimodal puzzles so hard they take groups of humans many hours to days to solve.
All top models score 0 on the Hard set, and <10% on the Normal set

@Schuldensuehner Lol, for most of the commenters the immigration is a disaster, when all the numbers say the opposite. Not so far away burning books you people, aren't you?

I am gradually leaving twitter behind. I am slowly subscribing people in BlueSky and unsubscribing them here. So please consider to post also (better still, only) in BlueSky. See you there
@JomauxJulien Please, consider to post your interesting content also in BlueSky or elsewhere. Many people are disgusted by this place, and are leaving it to the fascists and the russian bots. I would like not leaving you behind when I leave this cesspool.
🚀🚀 How does the @ApacheIceberg reading process look like?
◉ The reader first visits the catalog to retrieve the table's current metadata file location.
◉ After fetching the metadata file, it collects the table’s schema and checks partition schemes to understand the data organization.
◉ The reader retrieves the desired snapshot, usually the current one. For time-travel queries, it selects an older snapshot for time-travel queries by specifying a timestamp or snapshot ID.
◉ The manifest list associated with the selected snapshot is located.
◉ The reader then scans the manifest list to find the location of each manifest file and gathers partition bounds for filtering.
◉ Partition pruning is applied to discard unnecessary manifest files using these bounds.
◉ Each needed manifest file is opened, and the reader extracts the data file information, applying further pruning based on partition bounds.
◉ After identifying the required data files, the reader reads each file using the paths from the manifest file.
◉ Partition pruning happens at two levels: first, to limit manifest files and then to limit the data files.
◉ When reading Parquet data, additional query filters and column selection are applied to read only the necessary row groups and avoid scanning the entire file.
◉ The final result is returned to the client.

Video and data gathered by the WSJ from over 200 Tesla Autopilot crashes shows that longstanding concerns about Tesla’s camera-based technology, which differs from the rest of the industry, are showing up on the roads and putting the public at risk.

The real problem with EU cookie banners is that they're still around after several years of achieving nothing but being an annoyance. Mistakes happen. The key is to identify them and correct them quickly. If you can't do that, you're on the wrong path.
