I love birds, wildlife in general, mangroves and uplands. I did an Sc.D. in Mexico and work in UK conservation at the Barn Owl Trust in Devon. Views are my own.
@BarnOwlTrust For some Barn Owls courtship is well under way. For Blue Tits and the like there's still a while to go though, so the small bird boxes I replaced yesterday are in place well before nesting.
@BarnOwlTrust@AntrimLens I'm struggling to remember if there's any occasion where I've heard about this, but perhaps not. It seems more likely that anowl would tackle a squirrel as part of its defensive behaviour around a roost or nest site than simply attempt to take it as prey.
Dartmoor is an exception in that it offers the opportunity for profound contact through camping in a wilder landscape. I believe this should be a widespread right, not a dwindling anomaly.
It's a huge blow for the BMC and the outdoor community😠
The BMC will support @dartmoornpa, help defend our rights of access, and work alongside other like-minded organisations to try to overturn this result.

@pablopv_1972 Encontre un gato asi en los cerros de Portugal, y pense, sea un hibrido? Pero ahora que veo los ojos tan verdes en tu foto, me quedo pensando que si fue el ejemplar verdadero. Gracias!
Watching a Barn Owl hunting over rough grassland this afternoon, I was struck by its exquisite combination of sensory focus and aerial agility. Also good to see a successful strike, followed by some repose in a tree, so not too hungry tonight!
We're so grateful for your support, thank you, we're now less than 4,000 signatures away from 100,000, which will secure us a debate in parliament. Please help us spread the word, and reach 100K before the New Year! https://t.co/oWEpuTIWrR
Sadly, there was the carcass of a ½-fledged owlet under this nestbox, but hopefully removing several bucket-loads of nest debris to make the box deep again will prevent other young from getting out prematurely and falling.
This photo from a recent site visit shows Mateo cleaning out a nestbox at a Barn Owl nest site. Mateo and Pip also stabilised the box by adding brackets and created a new side inspection panel. How to clear out Barn Owl nestboxes and why it is necessary: https://t.co/YYqPd7rJOf
It's astonishing: One of this Pied Flycatcher clutch hatched, was ringed as a nestling by us in June 2021, flew at least 5,000 miles on a round trip to West Africa and back, to then be found in May 2022, breeding about 5 km away from where it hatched! Thank you @_BTO!
@BirdWatchIE@AlanMc_23@BarnOwlsNI@AntrimLens I’d love to have a clearer idea what National Highways mean by their target of ‘net biodiversity gain’ on major road networks, because offsetting wildlife deaths with species-rich grassland surely involves comparing apples to oranges?
We will soon be advertising for two positions within our Conservation Team! If you are knowledgeable about wild birds & think you have the passion, skills & experience to help us conserve the Barn Owl & its environment, get in touch! Send us an email to [email protected].
@BirdWatchIE@AlanMc_23@BarnOwlsNI@AntrimLens How horrendous, especially when proposals for mitigation measures such as low-flight barriers are waiting to be implemented and trialled.
It was great to talk to Howard James about Barn Owls and the Trust's work on East Devon Radio this morning. You can hear it at 1 hr 24 mins: https://t.co/uc3BSJLPrJ
📢 Radio interview tomorrow! 📻
Our Conservation and Science Officer, Dr Mateo Ruiz, will be live on East Devon radio at 11:15 tomorrow (Sunday) morning! He will be talking with Howard James all about the Barn Owl Trust 😊
Thanks to @Hyphenology & @Rachsmann for helpful input on how to put wellbeing firmly in the picture when it comes to environmental education. Doodles from the stimulating seminar with @FSCSlaptonLey...
Hundreds of private jets landed at the COP27 climate conference. We have both a leader credibility crisis and interrelated climate crisis. Why isn't this a virtual online conference? #COP27
#COP27 must deliver action. There has never been a more important time to reduce #emissions, and to conserve and restore #nature 🌿
#ClimateChange negotiations have failed over the last 30 years and its time for governments to deliver on their promises 🌎
