In a deeply emotional open letter addressed to his beloved brothers and sisters in South Africa, legendary Malian musician Salif Keita has announced the cancellation of all his upcoming commercial performances in the country. He said the decision comes in response to reports of rising xenophobic violence targeting African migrants, a situation Keita describes as a painful departure from the ideals of unity and shared struggle that defined South Africa's liberation.

Often referred to as the "Golden Voice of Africa," Keita has spent over five decades using his music to champion African identity and human rights. His connection to South Africa runs deep; in 1988, he was among the prominent global artists who performed at the historic Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert at Wembley Stadium, a pivotal moment in the international campaign against apartheid.

Reflecting on that history, Keita stated that the same conscience that drove him to stand against apartheid now forces him to distance himself from commercial stages in South Africa. He emphasised that his decision is not a rejection of the South African people, but a firm stance against the targeted violence facing migrants seeking work, safety, and dignity.

While acknowledging the economic and social frustrations faced by many citizens, Keita urged that local hardships should not be weaponised against fellow Africans. He reminded his audience that colonial borders are artificial divisions on a map that should never compromise shared humanity.

The artist clarified that he is not abandoning South Africa entirely, noting that he remains willing to perform in non-commercial spaces, such as townships, or any venue where music can be used to foster community dialogue, healing, and the spirit of ubuntu. He concluded his statement with a message of hope, expressing his desire to return to the country when solidarity and peace prevail.

Keita's cancellation underscores the growing concern among continental leaders and cultural figures regarding xenophobia, serving as a high-profile call for reflection on pan-African unity.
