@Mk4Colin@HowThingsWork_ This is compaction or pressing. The part is then taken to a furnace for sintering. The process combination is generally known as “press and sinter”.
Watch cases are often made through metal injection molding (MIM) which uses dies and powder/binder is squeezed in like playdough.

@draaakkon @HowThingsWork_ Particles are only loosely bonded and interlocked and the part is quite porous after this step. Heating in a furnace after pressing is required to sinter (densify) the part and give it strength.

J.J. Thomson won the Nobel in Physics in 1906 when he showed electrons were particles. 🔴
His son G. P. Thomson won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1937 for showing that electrons are waves. 🌊
R.I.P. Allan McDonald. Your example of the need for ethics in engineering and science is now a cautionary tale taught in engineering curriculum. Let us all strive to always do the right thing, especially when it isn’t the easy thing. https://t.co/bujTmvd1Kk
I consider this a blessing in disguise in that I will now explore opportunities, that are likely a better fit for my knowledge and experience, that I hadn’t considered in the past. I’m excited for what the future holds for my career. 7/7
Some personal news.
Last Thursday (June 4th) I was informed that my position was one of the roughly 1,000 eliminated in a company-wide workforce reduction. I'm proud of the impact I made and the relationships I formed with my colleagues and customers. 1/7
… and not a referendum of my professional self. This is further reinforced by the scores of messages I’ve received from colleagues and industry over the weekend, shocked by this news. Thank you to all that have already reached out, I deeply appreciate your support. 6/7
Here’s an example of how metallurgy and fracture mechanics are important to every day life.
The strength mechanical and civil engineers use in their designs is based on the resilience of the materials they depend upon. https://t.co/Kv6IqRstet
Cool visual of gas flow across L-PBF. The ejected powder particle silhouettes and evaporated metal and gas density variations are depicted in Schlieren (light scattering / index of refraction differences caused by gas density variations.) https://t.co/uonfFJZbnd
Looking forward to presenting today at PowderMet / AMPM 2019.
