Namibia will tell you. Across the border, in the exact same Orange Basin, they've drilled over 20 wells since 2022, most of them striking oil. Some of those finds now rank among the biggest discoveries in Africa's history.

South Africa holds the bigger share of that basin. And has nothing to show for it.

Every time TotalEnergies or Shell wins environmental approval to explore, it ends up back in the Western Cape High Court. The Green Connection, Natural Justice and small fishing cooperatives keep filing challenges. One approval was cancelled in August 2025.
