Did you know that #Europe alone has an untapped reservoir of 400 gigawatts of #energy, equivalent to Italy’s entire energy demand? It is there, below our feet, waiting for us: local #decarbonizing energy.⚡
By tapping into this reservoir, Europe, which today imports 56% of its energy, could reduce its dependency on imported fossil fuels by 30%. It is a massive boon for strategic #autonomy and energy independence.
So, what kind of energy exactly am I talking about?
First, low-carbon energy from untapped “wasted” sources: non-recyclable #waste, #wastewater, wasted heat and cold, unused industrial sites… ♻️💧
This comes with #flexibility: we help to balance power grids with innovative digital solutions, to consume less or produce more when needed. 📶
Second, district heating and cooling networks. And third, #EnergyEfficiency services for buildings and industries. 🏭
All of these energy sources are local and decentralized, operated at the scale of a city or industrial park, making supply chains extremely resilient.
They are “decarbonizing”, not merely green, but greening, helping our clients in their downward #carbon trajectory and replacing fossil fuels along the way. 420 million tons of CO2 could be avoided this way.
We are taking a broad view of energy here, encompassing not merely power, but also compressed air and heat, which have a big role to play as well.
This is the kind of energy the world needs right now! It can answer some of the most essential questions that our clients come to us with:
➡️ How can I reduce my carbon footprint?
➡️ How can I have a secure energy supply chain for the next 15 years?
➡️ How can I shield from wild energy price swings?
At @Veolia , we have strong ambitions in the energy sector and plan to invest €4 billion by 2030.
By 2030, our objective is to become number one in #heating networks in Europe, number one in energy efficiency services in Europe and the Middle East, and to increase our #bioenergy and #renewables capacity by 50% to 8GW, as well as a +50% increase to 3GW in flexible capacity.
I am extremely confident that the energy solutions I am talking about here are a big part of our future. According to industry estimates, their share in the world’s energy mix will double by 2030.
This is excellent news for energy independence, abundance, and affordability. For the planet as well.
So what are we waiting for? Let’s accelerate, the moment is now!
👏Thank you very much to: @ClaudeLaruelle (Deputy CEO Finance, Digital & Purchasing Veolia), @GavinGraveson (Senior Executive Vice-President, Northern Europe Zone Veolia) and Caroline Bragg (Interim CEO of the @theADEuk ) and all the participants of the event.
