Turning Vision Foundation Models into robust zero shot anomaly detectors is notoriously difficult. A new paper titled AnomalyVFM tackles this challenge head on.

The authors Matic Fučka, Vitjan Zavrtanik, and Danijel Skočaj from the University of Ljubljana propose a synthetic dataset generation pipeline combined with low rank feature adapters and a confidence weighted pixel loss. This allows them to adapt VFMs without relying on in domain training data.

By using RADIO as a backbone, AnomalyVFM achieves an average image level AUROC of 94.1 percent across 9 diverse datasets. This substantially outperforms current methods and addresses the limited diversity in existing auxiliary anomaly detection datasets.

It makes purely vision based models highly competitive against Vision Language Models like CLIP in zero shot scenarios.
