I met a few Chilean founders this week and have been telling them the same story.
Chile is a long, thin country, ~2,500 miles from north to south, and so narrow that we don't even have a concept of east or west. Just north, center, and south. Every time I come here, I try to spend at least one or two days in the very south, in Patagonia. If you've ever been there, you know it's far from everywhere, pretty much the end of the map.
Many years ago, I met a woman there who had lived her whole life in a small city in the south. She told me she was going to the north of Chile to visit a doctor. I was so confused. Why travel thousands of miles when the big cities of the center were closer? Then I understood: her "north" was a town a few hours up the road. Anything beyond it was unimaginable. Her north was my very south.
When you start a company, you need to set a north. How far you imagine you want to go. But every north is arbitrary, and every north is someone else's south. If north is your ambition, you need to remove the idea that there is a north in the first place.
