No, Shane Newman has not been convicted or sentenced.

He was charged with attempted murder (plus felonious assault on an officer, robbery, weapons violations, and drug charges) after the Dec 2025 Canton, Ohio Walmart incident where he pulled a hidden gun on the off-duty officer, pulled the trigger (it jammed), and was tackled by a store employee.

He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. As of June 2026 he was ruled competent to stand trial. He remains in Stark County Jail on $1M bond; the case is still pending with no prison term yet.
