Star Trek TNG had a profound impact on me growing up, and Patrick Stewart’s role above all: the secular, rationalist, egalitarian, post-scarcity (whisper it: socialist) vision of the future, a completion of the Radical Enlightenment project married to a sort of Aristotelian sense of virtue, duty, and deep purpose, a Shakespearean, theatrical-literary, humanist forgiveness and celebration of our foibles and fallenness, and Age of Discovery romantic call to adventure and exploration. I remain a believer that this world can yet be built.
usually kind of blithe about old actors dying but i kind of regard captain picard as the closest humanity has ever come to a portrayal of The Ideal Person
Finished Hyperion & I cannot recommend it enough. A jewel of American sci fi. Dan Simmons was a giant & I regret discovering him on the year of his passing.
Even in a year where I have read Dune, Starship Troopers, Canticle for Leibowitz & Shadow of the Torturer-it stands tall!
Wow it's almost like conservatives should've made an effort to stop Trump taking over the party and turning it into a corrupt slob of sycophancy and low IQ populism
But hey, look on the bright side, you also betrayed all your values and pissed on the constitution while doing it!
if it is dangerous as the sector claims, it should not be left to private enterprise. if it is transformative as the sector claims, it should not be left to private enterprise. if it is neither, it should not be left to private enterprise.
The "US has to race because otherwise China will win" narrative just doesn't apply to superintelligence. If leaders think China (or anyone) is about to create a superintelligence, the sane move is for the U.S. government to STOP THEM.
Big AI companies are racing to train superintelligent AI; they fear each other and say 'if we don't do it first, someone even worse will.' They can't even align or control their AIs today, and the AIs of the future will be much smarter and harder to understand. Even if they succeed, they will then have created the most intense concentration of power in human history -- a new artificial species of superintelligences obedient to the commands and values of a tiny handful of people. This situation is insane and must not be allowed to continue. The UK can't stop it unilaterally, but neither could it win World War Two unilaterally; the UK has even less reason to surrender now than it did then.
man, this is the least of our worries right now, but my god is this a depressing vision. no creativity on display, no taste, no friends (nothing to do while you wait??). what a bleak prize to risk the world for.
Sorry, the time for voluntary frameworks has obviously passed.
There is no reason for anyone to trust OpenAI to stick to this kind of thing without enforcement
Really broken up over the young woman who was murdered in Times Square. She’s just like any of us working as hard as she can to build a beautiful life and be a sterling member of society, makes me sick to my stomach
Find it funny how these DSA types are all for armed resistance to what they see as "imperialism" when the perceived aggressors are the US or Israel but when it's Russia doing the most nakedly imperialist war of aggression suddenly they're all about "negotiating".
George Washington reads the Declaration of Independence aloud to his troops in New York City, in full view of British warships in the harbor, taunting them to fire at him.
Thierry and Zlatan saying they wouldn't have become soccer players because of the costs of the American youth system, then seeing Lalas say it's a great system because it makes a lot of money for some people really sums it all up nicely
hamilton wrote 51 op-eds in under a year on a shared burner account to win one policy argument, then died in a beef that escalated from remarks printed in a newspaper. the most influential poster in american history simply could not log off, and the constitution is the result
