When I started to watch the French Catch footage in 2020, I posted a bunch of gifs on DVDVR. I figure I'll start posting them with some context at around one a day. It was striking to see timid Lord Alfred as a beast, a Backlund/Brock combo. Here he's taking Guy Robin's head off.
@MM_Knight To some degree this is fair but relating academically is enough to me since it’s how I spent the last few decades. When I say that, know that I mean for fans who appreciate it academically.
AEW is a big tent promotion. It should be. It has a coalition fanbase: people who love territories, King's Road, PWG, kids new to wrestling. It offers a lot of content, a lot of different styles. You're allowed to pick and choose and to watch (and NOT watch) on your terms.
Look, I enjoyed Preston Vance vs Lee Moriarty from ROH. It was interesting seeing a powerhouse in a Pure Rules match. BUT this Timecop stuff is getting out of hand. @theleemoriarty is good at what he does, but warping space and time by breaking Vance's face is a bridge too far.
There's something about Puerto Rico that just makes a wrestler the most over the top they can possibly be. When you get guys like Funk or, in this case, Randy Savage, that's saying a ton. Here he's up against Hercules Ayala, but also the crowd, and the entire world all at once.
for their main event angle. I actually think there’s more 92 WCW than 82 Florida in AEW TV (especially Collision/Rampage) but there are territorial elements/homages built into the DNA, interacting and clashing with all the other influences, and maybe more so than when it started.
Got some weird pushback on the territories line in this (which, not going to lie, was a only-so-veiled message to younger fans not to let anyone tell them that they don’t love wrestling if they don’t love a match, even if it’s Ospreay/Ricochet), and I get that

territories used to feature Thesz, that ran a lumberjack strap match with Jarrett which organically respected the gimmick and felt like it was out of Memphis (unlike the last Concession Stand Brawl which was a parody of such a thing). They just played homage to 89 Flair/Funk

All of this is great, but I like the first trip the best. Again, not to compare this to modern exchanges, but what really makes it work is Couderc selling his face after the first one.
@pwoloss Especially as De Facto TV champ. They probably should have Perry heatseeking by playing to the time limit and false tournament glory with the Continental, Ospreay with the TNT open challenge deal, and Okada defending in Arena Mexico or wherever with the International Title.
@paul_sosnowski Sometimes it's important people hear that they don't have to watch everything and even if they don't watch/enjoy a specific match, that doesn't mean that they don't love wrestling in their own way. They shouldn't be boxed out; they can find something else to enjoy on the show.

@ghostofkurta 1980 Portland is always there when you need it, with Frank Bonnema ready to welcome you home. Why you could go back right now. No one would blame you.
I give you nothing less than Inoki and Maeda locking in a modified version of La Estrella onto ANDRE THE GIANT and El Canek in 1983, including a great bit where Andre (accidentally?) trips Canek to set it up.

Things were a more organic and situational back then. It was so versatile a move that it just fit into different moments in different ways. You could probably argue wrestling has become even more symbolic now in a way that makes such a thing difficult.
Not the best timing but I’m going back through the #vaultomni show and Arn Anderson’s Spinebuster really is the best move in history. It could be a transition to heel offense, a cutoff of a babyface hope spot, a finisher, a quick bit of interference after a roll-in. The best.
@JimValley There’s a clear divide between people who grew up watching midcarders wrestle each other on Worldwide and Main Event and those that didn’t. Wrestling for the sake of wrestling can be a joy. It generally heated guys up to be more useful elsewhere but the journey was the point.
