This week, a 680MW gas plant was approved for Dublin 11
Gas is 95× more dangerous to the public health per TWh than nuclear.
K. Devereux @echolivecork asks: what community on the island of Ireland would accept a nuclear plant in their vicinity.
Would you support a gas plant?
@iaeaorg 2026 Fast Neutron Reactor Conference was held in Beijing last week.
It had a clear message: fast neutron reactor systems are no longer long-term prospects but an emerging industrial reality around the world.
Why should we care? See link 👇

#Nimbyism Nuclear power plants must keep radiation doses to the public below 0.3 mSv/year the same limit already applied to hospitals and industries using radioactive sources in ireland. Natural background radiation is ~4 mSv/year. Nuclear is regulated to 13× below background.
Fianna Fáil backs bill to lift Ireland's nuclear ban.
FF parliamentary party unanimously supported Cork East TD James O'Connor's legislation to remove the ban on nuclear fission with Environment Minister Darragh O'Brien backing it going to the Dáil.

Why is nuclear fuel millions of times more energy dense than natural gas?
Nuclear reactors utilise the strong nuclear force a binding energy at the nuclear scale rather than the electromagnetic force that governs chemical bonding in molecules.
Great description @1c905d11c9a4459
Significant progress in the Dáil today.
@SimonHarrisTD has stated he sees no need to maintain the prohibition on nuclear energy in Ireland.
Thanks to @JamesOConnorTD and others for pushing this on, the debate is moving forward.
We need to plan for Irelands future energy needs
Thanks to David Lawless and Denis Duff for Ireland's first Pro-Nuclear Public Meeting took place on May 5th! 🎉
They had a brilliant open discussion on nuclear energy as a path to a decarbonised grid.
Big thanks to everyone who came.
The next one can't come soon enough! ☢️
What steps are involved in Ireland building a nuclear power station
1️⃣ Consider whether to permit nuclear
2️⃣ Legislate if a case exists
3️⃣ Approve specific plant designs
4️⃣ Approve a build application at a specific site
5️⃣ Build the approved project
6️⃣ Permit startup & operation
@AoifeMFoley@18for0@JoeK1798@thejournal_ie It actually doesn't seem possible for me to DM you for some reason. It would be great to discuss this in more detail. I think Denis Duff co-founder of 18for0 has reached out to you via linkedin.
@AoifeMFoley@JoeK1798@thejournal_ie Setting up regulators and various authorities is complex. I think we may need experts in the field of nuclear energy to advise the government in an official capacity. We are IAEA members, that should be our first port of call to give us more exact timescales.
@AoifeMFoley@JoeK1798@thejournal_ie I appreciate that there may be some difficult upcoming decisions to be made regarding the energy crisis. When would be a good time to go through this process? Are there other complex pieces of legislation passing through the Dáil and Seanad in the same period?
@AoifeMFoley@JoeK1798@thejournal_ie We need to be in a position where we can deal with the immediate issues and plan medium to long term solutions. For nuclear to be an option in 5 to 10 years we need to start now with an informed debate. Amend the electricity regulation act and the planning and development act.
@AoifeMFoley@thejournal_ie 18for0 members are volunteers working full time jobs and committing their free time to carry out the role of what should be a publicly funded body. They have done an amazing job so far and I am proud to be working with them.
73% of Irish people support removing the nuclear ban.
Less than 20% want to focus only on renewables.
Nuclear can create jobs, reduce electricity prices, improve grid reliability and enable Ireland to meet our climate commitments (see our report below).

@MichealMartinTD, “We certainly should look and examine seriously options like nuclear power"
The first phase of the IAEA milestone approach includes a pre-Feasibility Study which will help a country establish a strong national position and answer the key question: why nuclear?
@GameOnClimate@18for0@JamesOConnorTD So someone is going to break into a km deep repository to steal high level nuclear waste weighing 100s of tons for what reason exactly?
Big moment — @JamesOConnorTD has introduced a bill to reverse Ireland's ban on nuclear energy.
The path to nuclear energy has been set out in the IAEA milestone approach. We just need to take the first step.
Let's make Ireland's energy supply cheaper, cleaner and more secure 🇮🇪
Belgium to suspend plans to decommission nuclear reactors.
@Bart_DeWever, "the government is making the choice of having a secure, affordable and long-lasting source of energy, with less reliance upon fossil fuels, which will give us more control over our supplies".
You are invited to the first meeting of... 'Net Zero Needs Nuclear!' 🎉
Let's start the national discussion on nuclear with some speeches, music and a few sneaky pints.
Anseo pub on Camden Street 📌
May 5th, 7pm 🗓️
See you all then.
