A man jailed for life after taking part in the brutal torture and murder of 14-year-old Adam Morrell has been released from prison.

Matthew Welsh, described during the 2003 trial as the ringleader, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years.

Adam was subjected to a prolonged and horrific attack in Loughborough. He was punched, kicked and stamped on before being doused with boiling water mixed with sugar.

He was then strangled to death.

The gang placed Adam’s body in a bath before using a saw to dismember him.

His remains were put into plastic bags and scattered around Loughborough. His head was later discovered in a canal.

A post-mortem found more than 280 injuries on Adam’s body.

Welsh was released in 2024 after serving more than 20 years.

He is now living in a hostel in Leicester and is understood to work as a forklift driver in Marchington, while also being registered with an employment agency.

He reportedly spends time in Burton and Uttoxeter and has family connections in York, Portsmouth and East Staffordshire.

Despite his conviction and life sentence, Welsh is alleged to tell people that he was only imprisoned because he was “guilty by association”.

The other people involved received different outcomes:

• Daniel Biggs was cleared of murder and GBH but admitted conspiring to pervert the course of justice and was jailed for 2½ years.

• Sarah Morris, Welsh’s girlfriend, was cleared of murder but convicted of deliberately attacking Adam and jailed for four years.

• Nathan Barnett pleaded guilty to Adam’s manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and was detained indefinitely in secure accommodation under the Mental Health Act.

Welsh’s release does not change the sentence imposed for Adam’s killing or the horrific circumstances surrounding the crime.

Most importantly, this is about Adam.
He was just 14 years old. His life was taken in an appalling act of violence, and his name should never be forgotten.

The Murfreesboro Police Department Special Victims Unit launched its investigation into the couple on August 15, 2023, after receiving a report concerning a 5-year-old child. Investigators ultimately uncovered two additional young victims who suffered abuse between 2021 and 2023.

His wife, Shaantal Garlick, 32, was also convicted by the Murfreesboro jury for her direct involvement in the abuse. She was found guilty of facilitation of aggravated rape of a child and aggravated child neglect for enabling her husband's actions and failing to protect the victims. Both defendants are currently held at the Rutherford County jail ahead of a final sentencing hearing scheduled for November 10, 2026, which will determine Shaantal's full sentence and the remaining counts for Benjamin.

Because the couple operated a traveling evangelical ministry that targeted Hispanic communities across multiple states, law enforcement officials believe there may be additional victims nationwide.
