@ThinkPrivacy_ @nicfab@SimpleXChat@xmpp@snikket_im@tigase If you're familiar with XMPP already, the goals here will make sense: https://t.co/DK3tgCUpJW
Many people use Snikket every day (including my own family) without a clue about XMPP. That there is a range of compatible software and services is a bonus for them to discover later :)
@ThinkPrivacy_ @nicfab@SimpleXChat@xmpp@snikket_im@tigase Snikket should really be considered independently from the fact that it uses XMPP. I 100% agree that recommending just "XMPP" as a concept is too advanced for most people. However Snikket is designed specifically with user-friendliness in mind.
@gasull@nghiacc@session_app@element_hq@signalapp I (and many others) send/receive voice messages in XMPP all the time... what's the last XMPP-based messenger you tried, and when did you try it?
@taseroth XMPP is still a thing! True, it's not openly used in consumer messaging since Google and FB closed up, but it still powers many platforms (inc. Zoom, popular games, etc)
Many orgs, unis and privacy-minded individuals also continue to deploy and use it too.

@Malcolm_Ocean As someone who has been working (and still is) on XMPP stuff for a long time now, I can assure you that XMPP didn't "die" π
But indeed, it's sad that all these silos exist and are not interested in interoperability (XMPP or not).
@KODA_VT Hey K.O.D.A.! Latest Monal or Siskin should be good for most people. If you're having sync issues you might also want to check the server you are using is up to date, e.g. using https://t.co/0KCwlhIuEE
I'm an XMPP dev, so happy to help if you have any questions!
@shengchalover @brave@xmpp@DuckDuckGo@ProtonMail XMPP still has a large active open-source community, businesses and other organizations using it. It would certainly be nice to see it more popular in the general "consumer" space again, if we can avoid a repeat of Google Talk this timeπ
@zeank If you have people actively using the service, my recommendation is to transfer it to another public XMPP service operator. There are multiple reputable community members who I'm sure would be happy to help with this.
@eevee @zbgnwzlnrwcz @the_great_hippo Ah, but XMPP is not an app, it's a protocol. There are plenty of apps built on XMPP that are E2EE out of the box.
@CoinbitIO@LukeDashjr@bitcoin_eagle@MWietersheim@signalapp@snikket_im working on this. First iOS version a couple of months ago, more improvements landing in January. My whole family migrated from WhatsApp to Snikket (XMPP) for communication between each other.
Not saying there isn't more to do (there always is) but stuff is out there!
@xmpp_is Let us know the result. The past week or two we've made some significant changes to how mod_smacks processes stanzas for hibernating sessions. These changes aren't in the community module, but available in trunk nightly builds and (soon) 0.12. We expect much better performance!
@itsLIRAN@StopAndDecrypt Except @xmpp is still great and being improved continuously :)
The issue of adoption is sadly not for lack of suitable protocols. That's why I'm excited to see progress on things like the EU's Digital Markets Act, introducing interoperability requirements for online services.
@identicallyfree@xmpp Wow! That's like saying the GNOME ecosystem has failed. Wonderful find :)
I love being a part of the very active #XMPP community, and there are plenty of great projects in it. It's unfortunate that many people don't look beyond Pidgin/libpurple which lag far behind the times.
