Teaching self-advocacy more explicitly and integrating it as a core component of my ESL curriculum is something I want to focus on next year. The need for such self-advocacy is magnified in remote learning and HS/college!

So what shows are your students watching? What, if any, messages about bilingualism and/or social justice do these shows convey?

Since many students are spending a lot of time watching shows like this now, I wonder how we can leverage this engagement to up lang/acad learning?

Have you seen "On My Block"? Many of my 8th graders have, which got me watching it.

It subtly asserts a bilingual norm, whereby even characters who don't speak Spanish at home (i.e. Monse and Jamal) causally slip code mesh in Spanish.

The characters also throw shade on the Spanish mistakes of their friends (i.e. Olivia). I wonder how this motivates/shames some of my students to improve their Spanish/L1.

The show also digs into issues of gender, class and childhood trauma.
