This just shows why Reform isn’t fit to govern. They seem incapable of understanding the difference between reforming a broken system and taking a sledgehammer to it.

PIP isn’t an out of work benefit. Plenty of disabled people work and use it to cover the extra costs that allow them to work and contribute, whether that’s taxis because they can’t drive or use public transport, a Motability car, walking aids, sensory equipment or other disability related costs.

Take that support away and how many people end up unable to work, lose their job and become more reliant on Universal Credit? They stop paying into the Treasury and start needing more support from it. How does the taxpayer win there?

And council run disability accounts sound awful. Instead of disabled people deciding what they actually need, you create another layer of bureaucracy where people have to justify purchases, wait for approval and hope their council actually has the money and services available. Given the state of council finances already, it sounds like a recipe for a massive postcode lottery.

The welfare system absolutely needs reform. We should be much better at helping people who can work into work. But the answer is removing barriers and giving disabled people more independence, not taking that independence away.

Reform keep looking at complicated problems, stripping out all the nuance and reaching for whatever solution makes the best headline. Governing actually requires fixing systems, not just burning them down.

Goes without saying Reform's plan to axe PIP and the health component of Universal Credit is one of the stupidest, most damaging, and altogether pointlessly cruel policy proposals a political party could make - not least because it'll end up targeting their own voters.
