🚨New article co-authored with @Matt_B_Tyler published today: We say we care about victim-survivors of violence and yet we jail them as kids.
We need a fundamental shift away from punitive approaches & towards therapeutic responses grounded in the needs of children & young people.

Does Australia have a problem with child welfare in child focused sectors? Early childcare. Out of home care. Juvenile justice. Youth detention. Why do we keep seeing breaches of basic standards across child-focused settings?

📰 Today Conor Pall & I have a co-authored article in The Canberra Times calling for urgent action to support early intervention, response, and recovery for children as victim-survivors of family violence in their own right.

My new paper is “The Autumn of the White Patriarch: Identity and Inequality in American Capitalism.”
This is the key chart. It shows how white men’s share of national income has fallen since the 1960s. Imho, this is why we have such identity politics on the US right today. 1/10
Some of the biggest tech companies in the world served ads on a website featuring images of child abuse, helping to fund its operations https://t.co/VJvCV47xQK
Prevalence of diverse genders & sexualities in Australia & associations w/ 5 forms of child maltreatment & multi-type maltreatment - Congrats to co-authors @HigginsDaryl@DivnaHaslam@DavidFinkelhor@RosanaPacella and others in post below https://t.co/q8KmDYYDPN
"Moral panic" theory has been the dominant framing around child sexual abuse in the social sciences and humanities for over a generation, leaving these disciplines unprepared to account for the scale of child sexual exploitation and abuse as the evidence becomes undeniable.
A huge contrast between the attention to the sexual exploitation of children in care in the UK for over a decade - a national scandal - and the comparative silence and disinterest in Australia.
In Australia, 59% of all sexual assaults reported to police involve a child victim. Most prosecutions for sexual violence in the country are child matters #16days
In my article for the November @THEMONTHLY issue I reflect on:
🔸the challenges of measuring progress against the National Plan to end Violence against Women & Children,
🔸the need for improved data, including on people who use violence,
🔸the need to ensure sexual violence does not fall off the agenda, and
🔸the importance of moving beyond rhetoric in our commitment to seeing children as victim-survivors in their own right.

Australia is failing its children. A ‘tough on crime’ approach to youth #justice puts politics before prevention (via @GuardianAus): https://t.co/X4IzWLtSnW
Jim Cole @AilecsLab: Last year, the US govt put $54 billion into anti-drug trafficking efforts and $200 million into online child protection - indicative of the lack of prioritising and resourcing of child safety.
Great to be at the @NTVorg Conference Day 1 today listening to a range of presentations on policy, practice and research. Looking forward to being part of a session with @JesuitSocialSer Matt Tyler this afternoon on engaging men & boys in violence prevention.
A new report from @Respect__Vic examines how men in Australia are challenging harmful masculine norms, and what this means for preventing violence against women.
The report presents findings from focus group discussions with Australian men, following on from our Man Box 2024 report, made possible by the support of Respect Victoria. It explores how men conform to, navigate or challenge harmful expressions of masculinity.
