@faustianwigger You can have a fully custom shell made for Win11 over weekend. I know because I made one, with tiling windows, app launcher and fully customizable taskbar with widgets like in Omarchy. It's surprisingly fast. Go build it.
@bradgessler Software engineers get verified against reality fast because code works or it doesn’t. Mathematicians spent decades in pure abstraction with much slower feedback loops, so they could maintain a stronger sense of unique genius. AI is a sudden, brutal reality check.
Most domestic recycling efforts are empirically retarded, counterproductive, and require you don't value your time. Their real function is to fill the God-shaped hole, sized for penance, prayer, and sacrifice, in people's souls. https://t.co/T77DAx1eve
Apple says you need a Mac to build iPhone apps.
Today I built one on Omarchy Linux, submitted it to the App Store, installed it on my iPhone over USB, and stopped it at a breakpoint in the debugger.
No Mac anywhere.
It's all open source:

It can derive the keys, decrypt the downloaded book, and feed it into the reader. The remaining part of Kindle software is a “codebook” which is only roughly 1 MB of lookup tables, plus constants in the generated source.

The real wild part.
Prometheus decoder carried a small chunk of Kindle’s compiled code. When it needed to unlock a book, it executed that chunk. Now I have a prototype that performs those calculations using Python source reconstructed from the binary.

This is wild.
Peak working set:
• Prometheus: 340 MB
• Kindle: 847 MB
Startup: ~0.6s vs ~3s.
Fixed a few UX issues tonight.
Still plenty of little things to do.
@dhh That's why I left programming at a huge corporation and moved into games. I think you have to care about what you're building and be genuinely excited by it to make something other people can care about.
Aaaand I now have my very own custom kindle reader.
It looks and controls exactly the way I wanted.
And it performs super smoothly.
It's time to start using it now and iron any kinks along the way.
I'll share it once I feel it's good enough.
My god this is so much fun.
I built a few tools for myself with agents and they fly.
Computers are ridiculously fast.
Apparently a lot of software is just human slop.
Over-engineered, under-optimized, drowning in unnecessary abstractions, copy-pasted patterns, and half-understood dependencies.
